Giants vs. Mets Free MLB Picks and Preview

Table of Contents

Wow, are the Mets legitimate. The New York Mets completed a doubleheader sweep against the San Francisco Giants, at home, on Tuesday, to increase their record to 9-3 on the season. After the Mets earned a doubleheader sweep yesterday, can the Giants salvage the four-game series and get one back in tonight’s MLB game? Below, I’ll analyze the MLB odds and share a winning pick! Let’s go.

San Francisco Giants vs. New York Mets

Wednesday, April 20, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

The Mets could become the first team to win 10 games this season with another win tonight. However, the Mets won’t have manager Buck Showalter in the dugout, as he’ll be having a medical procedure done today.

Carlos Rodon will take the mound for the Giants. He’s one of the major acquisitions of the off-season. Rodon is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA to start the season. He’s got a WHIP of .75 and has 21 strikeouts on the year. Dating back to last season, Rodon had a 3.50 xFIP with 35.4% strikeouts and 6.9% walks. He won’t earn a large number of ground balls but does limit line-drive contact.

The Mets lineup will have plenty of right-handed bats that can do damage against lefties including Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, J.D. Davis, Pete Alonso, and Eduardo Escobar. Dating back to last season, Alonso has a .325 ISO and .379 wOBA against lefties. Escobar, who is a switch hitter, has a .255 ISO and wOBA of .375. Those two bats would be the two x-factors against Rodon.

Chris Bassitt

On the other hand, the Mets added Chris Bassitt via trade with the Athletics over the off-season and he hasn’t disappointed either. Bassitt is 2-0 with a .075 ERA. He’s struck out 24 batters and has a WHIP of .67. Dating back to last season, Bassitt has a 4.11 xFIP with 25.3% strikeouts and 6.1% walks. He’s not getting a high number of grounders and allows nearly 22% line drives.

Ultimately, Bassitt can struggle a bit against lefties, giving up a .164 ISO. It’s an average ISO number. However, the Giants have five lefties in the lineup that can do real damage against righties. The lefties include Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt, Joc Pederson, Brandon Crawford, and Steven Duggar.

There’s just more potential in the Giants lineup going up against Bassitt when it comes to power.

Prediction

Therefore, for my MLB pick, I like the Giants to escape with the win tonight against the Mets. New York won’t have their manager in the dugout and Showalter has proven to be key for the Mets with their early-season dominance.

Rodon has the better stuff and is able to earn more strikeouts while keeping line drives down. He can get a bit wild and walk some guys. If the Mets want to win tonight’s MLB game, they’ll need to stay patient at the plate.

Overall, however, Rodon should be able to get by with a win against the Mets. The Giants have been able to platoon guys and really adjust to whoever they are facing. Take the Giants here.
