Cornell Big Red vs. Dartmouth Big Green

Friday, February 18, 2022 – 7:00 PM EST at Edward Leede Arena

The Cornell Big Red will head out on the road to take on the Dartmouth Big Green in an interesting Ivy League contest tonight. Dartmouth has lost 14 of its last 16 games and is 2-7 in Ivy League play this season. Earlier in the conference play, Dartmouth already lost to Cornell, 79-71.

Currently, Cornell has been the more effective offense. The Big Red are shooting an effective field goal percentage of 53.8 percent while shooting 34.2 percent from deep and 56.1 percent from inside the arc.

Cornell has a knack for getting to the line and also hit 71.1 percent of free throws. Turnovers can get high at times, allowing 20.1 percent per game, however, Dartmouth isn’t an aggressive defense and shouldn’t force that many to make a difference.

On defense, Dartmouth is allowing teams to shoot an effective field goal percentage of 51.8 percent while giving up 34.5 percent from deep and 51.8 percent from inside the arc. The Big Green don’t foul all that often but have struggled to keep opposing offenses off the glass this season.

Cornell, on the other hand, earns 27 percent of offensive rebounds and should stay around that average in this game.

On the other hand, Dartmouth’s offense has been bad, to say the least. The Big Green average an effective field goal percentage of 47.3% while shooting just 33.3 percent from deep and 45.1 percent from inside the arc.

Just like Cornell, Dartmouth loves to shoot threes, but Cornell defends the three-point shot much better than Dartmouth does. Cornell is allowing opponents to shoot just 32.7 percent from deep and 52.4 percent from inside the arc.

The Big Red isn’t as good defending inside, however, again, Dartmouth has struggled to score inside all season long and take mostly three-point shoots.

When those three-point shots miss, Dartmouth is only earning 23% of offensive rebounds this season. The Big Green also doesn’t get to the line at a consistent rate either, despite shooting 77.3 percent from the line.

Prediction

Cornell is your average defense but they’ve been an above-average offense this year. The Big Red move quickly and try to score fast against the opposition. That’s how they get wide-open looks from three-point land. The Big Red is also extremely deep and uses 44.3 percent of minutes off the bench.

All in all, Cornell should be able to get more quality looks from deep, earn more offensive rebounds, get to the line more frequently and defend at a higher rate. For our NCAAB picks, I’ll take Cornell as the slight underdog at even money.
