Florida State Seminoles vs. Florida Gators

Sunday, November 14, 2021 – 1:00 PM EST at Exactech Arena

The Florida State Seminoles will look for their eighth straight win over the Florida Gators, on the road, today. The Seminoles last lost to the Gators in 2013. It’s been dominance ever since for the Seminoles.

Florida State has lost some old pieces and brought in some new pieces this season. No longer does Florida State have Scottie Barnes, M.J. Walker, Balsa Koprivica and RaiQuan Gray. However, the Seminoles just added new talent and recovered very quickly this season.

The Seminoles defeated UPenn, 105-70 in their home opener. We’re used to seeing plenty of defense in Florida State games, but the offense showed up, getting to the line 34 times in that one. Against high major teams, getting to the line 34 times might not happen, but overall, the length that Florida State has presents problems regardless.

Florida State recruited Caleb Mills from Housrton and Cam’Ron Fletcher from Kentucky along with a couple major freshmen, including Jalen Warley and Matthew Cleveland. It’s just rinse and repeat for Florida State. Against UPenn, 16 players took the court in the opener with all but three scoring at least two points. The Seminoles have depth but it was hard to know how this team will play when games are a bit tighter, like this one coming up.

On the other hand, the Florida Gators lost five key players from last year’s team and really needed to build the team using the transfer portal. The Gators added Myreon Jones from Penn State and Brandon McKissic from Kansas City, two big time scorers that can do a little bit of everything.

Florida defeated Elon, 74-61 in their home opener, which was a bit underwhelming, especially in comparison to Florida State. McKissic only took five shots in 28 minutes and the bench added just 10 points despite eight players coming off the bench.

Right now, Florida doesn’t really look all that deep outside of the starting five. Those minutes where Florida goes to the bench, could be the minutes were Florida State starts to pull away.

Prediction

The Florida State Seminoles were underdogs at the opening and are now favorites. It’s crazy how quickly things will change after one game. But you know what, sharps are right. The money is right. Florida State is the better team. Until Florida gets some more guys comfortable shooting the ball a bit, it’s going to be hard for the Gators to keep up with Florida State and their offense.

Florida State won’t get to the line 34 times in this one, but they’ll still likely out-rebound Florida and, of course, score more points than Florida. For my college basketball pick, give me the Seminoles, on the road, to continue their winning streak against the Gators in this one. Florida really doesn’t look that great on paper or on the screen right now.
