Gunner Stockton #14 of the Georgia Bulldogs rushes in to score against Marvae Myers #3 of the Marshall Thundering Herd

The SEC got some scrutiny after losing some big games in Week 1. The Texas Longhorns dropped a game to the Ohio State Buckeyes, and Florida State handed Alabama a massive loss.

However, the SEC currently has nine wins against Power 4 opponents. That’s four more than the Big Ten and Big 12 and six more than the ACC. Ultimately, the SEC is still proving it’s the deepest conference, despite missing out on a National Championship over the last two seasons.

That said, let’s look at the top SEC teams and their college football conference winner predictions for this season.

SEC Teams to Watch

Texas (+270)

The Texas Longhorns aren’t playing an SEC game until October 4. After a loss to the Buckeyes in Week 1, Texas added three tune-ups on its schedule. The Longhorns beat San Jose State, 38-7, last week and will get UTEP and Sam Houston State in the next two weeks before having to face Florida.

These tune-ups should help since Arch Manning looked abysmal when he faced real competition as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns. Still, the defense looks elite. If Manning can limit turnovers, Texas will be legitimate this year.

Georgia (+300)

While Texas waits until October to play SEC football, the Georgia Bulldogs have a gauntlet of games to close out September.

Georgia will take on Tennessee on the road this weekend, and then will face Alabama at home the following weekend. We’ll learn a lot about Georgia before we know anything about Texas.

That said, Georgia defeated Marshall, 45-7, to start the season and most recently knocked off Austin Peay, 28-6. The defense looks fine, but the offense was a bit underwhelming against Austin Peay.

Remember: Carson Beck is now with Miami, so Georgia is using Gunner Stockton at quarterback. He’s had big game experience from last season, but the offense still didn’t look crisp on Saturday.

Ultimately, Georgia will also have to face Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss, Florida, Mississippi State, and Texas on the schedule. That’s going to be hard.

LSU (+500)

The LSU Tigers finally have a defense. Yet, something looks off with Garrett Nussmeier. Nussmeier is a top Heisman candidate, but he struggled once his starting center had to leave the field due to injury.

LSU will face Florida at home to start its SEC journey. After Florida lost to South Florida, LSU is easily the favorite in this game. Yet, if the offense doesn’t execute better, they’ll struggle to win games with a lack of offense.

Anyway, it’s easier to trust Nussmeier and the LSU offense after what we saw last year. It’ll come together. LSU doesn’t have to play Texas or Georgia and instead gets South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Texas A&M.

LSU’s schedule is easier than Georgia’s, for example. It’s why I’d rather select LSU at +500 than Georgia at +300.

Bet On The SEC Now!

It’s very early in the season. But Texas, Georgia, and LSU are certainly the favorites within the college football conference winner predictions this season. While LSU has the best value, Texas does not have to play an SEC opponent until October. That’s a massive benefit as Texas works through some early kinks after its loss to Ohio State.
