The Texas Open is steeped in PGA Tour history, dating back one hundred years to 1922. In recent years, it’s taken the slot of the week before the US Masters on the roster.
2022 Valero Texas Open
March 31 – April 03 at TPC San Antonio
Par 72, 7435 yards
The TPC San Antonio is known as a course that suits strong drivers off the tee who can combine length with accuracy. Little wonder that the course rewards those attributes off the tee with Greg Norman being the designer, driving was the strongest area of his game. Bermuda greens with overseeded Poa annua require precise iron play from the fairways this week more than most.
It’s a “Life of Riley” for Davis as He “Gets Back on the Bike” in Texas
A couple of weeks ago at the Valspar Championship, Davis Riley would have been disappointed not to land a maiden PGA Tour title when taking a three-shot lead into the final round. A triple-bogey eight on the par 5, 8th hole, brought the chasing pack back into contention.
He rallied well to make the sudden death play-off but lost to Sam Burns who held a long putt from the fringe of the second play-off hole green. It was probably, a good thing that Riley didn’t play last week, allowing him to regroup and take the many positives away from that performance at the Copperhead Resort in Florida.

If his spirit needed an injection of confidence, then returning to the scene of his last professional tournament victory will help this week. Back in 2020 when a Korn Ferry Tour regular, Davis Riley won his second title of the year when winning the TPC San Antonio Championship at the Oaks. An impressive four rounds showed how his elite ball-striking skills are perfect for the test here in Texas.
Last week on the Korn Ferry Tour, Trevor Werbylo won the Lake Charles Championship the week after the disappointment of losing out in the Louisiana Open when he should have closed out a win. On the European Tour, Ewen Ferguson won the Qatar Masters a few weeks after blowing a four-shot lead in the Kenya Open.
This week, it’s Davis Riley’s turn to “get back on the bike” and bounce back to win the Valero Texas Open so take the +5500 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) amongst your best golf bets this week.

Gary Woodland to Get That ‘Comeback’ Win at the Oaks Like Jordan Spieth Last Year
Golf fans were treated to a ‘career comeback’ win last year from Jordan Spieth at the Texas Open. Similarly, Gary Woodland has disappeared from the higher echelons of the sport in the last couple of seasons since his US Open win in 2019 at Pebble Beach.
In recent weeks on the PGA Tour, Woodland is threatening to find his best form with a couple of top 5 finishes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Honda Classic. His Players Championship missed cut can be ignored after being on the wrong side of a weather bias in the draw.

The week following at the Valspar Championship, he was back to his solid best where only a cold putter stopped him from finishing higher than 21st. A week off before this week’s Texas Open will have given Woodland a chance to freshen up.
Last year at TPC San Antonio, the Oaks Course, Gary Woodland came 6th on his first visit in six years and now in better form I’ve included him in my best golf bets this week at the attractive price of +3500 with GTbets (visit our GTbets Review).
