San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks

Sunday, December 05, 2021 – 04:25 PM EST at Lumen Field

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers were having a rough season and there were even calls for coach Kyle Shanahan to be fired. After starting 2-4, the 49ers have won four of their last five to re-establish themselves as playoff contenders. Their most recent win was over the Vikings on Sunday 34-26. The 49ers were able to establish the strong style that makes them so tough to deal with. The 49ers’ offense is based on running the ball. The 49ers were able to amass an impressive 208 yards on 39 carries against Minnesota. With the Niners being able to establish the run, there has been less pressure on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners can play their brand of bully ball. The 49ers are now sixth in the league in rushing yards per game at 131 per game.

The Niners’ winning streak is also been keyed by the improved play of the defense as well. The 49ers defense has been limiting their opponents’ offensive output and getting great field position for their offense. This is the return to the personality that Shanahan instilled in the team that led them to the Superbowl in 2019. After a slow start, the hopes in San Francisco are high that this team has returned to being a true contender.

Many 49ers fans were calling for QB Jimmy Garoppolo to be benched in favor of rookie QB Trey Lance. Yet Garoppolo’s play recently has quieted those calls. Garoppolo has an impressive 99.1 passer rating this season to go along with 13 TDS and only 6 interceptions. At this point, the Niners know what they have when Garoppolo, a solid player who can be effective and avoid turnovers.

The 49ers have the sixth-best defense in the league in yards against at 318.7 yards per game. The 49ers defense is keyed by the play of the defensive line and the pressure that Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead are able to apply. With Bosa and Armstead providing a strong pass rush, the 49ers can drop seven men back into coverage and make it tough for opposing quarterbacks. The 49ers defensive scheme is reliant on the front 4 to get pressure and the play of Bosa and Armstead could determine the outcome of this game.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks streak of having a winning season no matter the circumstances has finally come to an end. The Seahawks have not had a losing season since 2011 and have made the playoffs in every year except 2017. But the streak seems to be all but over. The Seahawks are 3-8 this season and would have to win all of their remaining games in order to have a winning record.

The Seahawks have overcome injuries to all types of players every year, but this year it seems the depleted talent on the roster and injuries have caught up to this team. Russell Wilson was able to will his team to victory, but with Wilson fighting through injury, he doesn’t seem to be the same player that the Seahawks have relied upon for the last 5 years. The calls of "Let Russ Cook" have turned to "Let Russ Heal" as he is obviously not playing at 100% health. The Seahawks hopes of a winning season have slipped away.

The Seahawks have the worst defense in the league in the yards against category. Seahawks opponents averaged 399 yards per game against them. The Seahawks offense is also stagnated and they are 31st in the league in yards at 295.7. The Seahawks can’t score and they can’t defend, which has been a recipe for a losing season.

At the beginning of the Seahawks run over the last nine years, they were a defensive-based team that relied on a ball-control offense. Over the years, the Seahawks transitioned into an offensive team. They’ve had one of the worst defenses the last couple of years, but Russell Wilson’s offensive brilliance has kept them winning games. With the offense declining, and the defense not getting any better, the Seahawks might be due for a rebuild.

The Seahawks had a tepid performance against the Washington Football Team on Monday Night Football where they only put up 15 points. Russell Wilson did not look one hundred percent healthy and the offense stagnated quite often. The Seahawks were completely reliant on passing and only gained 34 yards rushing the ball. This imbalanced offense cannot win consistently in the NFL.

Key Matchup

Seattle defensive line vs. 49ers offensive line

The 49ers’ resurgence is completely based upon their newfound ability to run the ball. Regardless of who is in the backfield, the offensive line has been opening up huge holes for runners. For the Seahawks to have a chance to win the game, they are going to have to be able to stop the run and get pressure on Garoppolo when he does drop back to pass.

If the 49ers are able to get big chunks of yardage every time they run the ball, the Seahawks will have little to no chance of winning. If the Seahawks can slow down the 49ers run game and put the ball in Garoppolo’s hands, they have a good chance to allow Russell Wilson to win a passing duel with Jimmy Garoppolo.

Best Bet

The Seahawks team is heading towards rock bottom and although it’s rough to lay points in a divisional game, this 49ers team is trending in the right direction. The Seahawks are struggling on both sides of the ball and are heavily reliant on Russell Wilson. With Wilson not being fully healthy, they don’t have much to lay their hat on. The 49ers will take advantage of this in an opportunity to stick it to their rivals.

The 49ers will win and win by a nice margin. I expect the 49ers to have another big game on the ground as they run away with the victory. Lay the points. Take the Niners for your NFL pick.
