Chicago Bears President & CEO Kevin Warren wrote an open letter to Bears’ fans explaining the team’s frustration and purpose in exploring other avenues, even the one found in neighboring Hammond, Indiana, located just 20 miles south of Chicago.
Warren’s letter, in part, read as follows: “Consequently, in addition to Arlington Park, we need to expand our search and critically evaluate opportunities throughout the wider Chicagoland region, including Northwest Indiana.
“This is not about leverage. We spent years trying to build a new home in Cook County. We invested significant time and resources evaluating multiple sites and rationally decided on Arlington Heights. Our fans deserve a world-class stadium. Our players and coaches deserve a venue that matches the championship standard they strive for every day. With that in mind, our organization must keep every credible pathway open to deliver that future.”

Indiana lawmakers approved legislation this year establishing a pathway for a proposed stadium development near the Wolf Lake area. Under the plan, the Bears would contribute more than $2 billion toward construction costs, while the state (Indiana) would provide roughly $1 billion through tax-related funding mechanisms.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed the legislation into law shortly after it received final approval. State officials have indicated that negotiations and any remaining details regarding the Hammond proposal will now be handled directly between the state and the Bears organization.
