Saban era scheduling gimmick. It's basically a bye week going into playoffs, trade off is they historically opened hard first few weeks

Every SEC school does this. Even my lowly Kentucky Wildcats scheduled Murray State today. OU scheduled Maine earlier this season. I guess SEC schools do this because the conference is difficult as it is anyway so a glorified bye week is useful to prepare for a tougher game down the road.
