Uganda

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Travelers are advised to reconsider travel to Uganda due to the threat of terrorist attacks and the prevalence of violent crime.

This advice has been updated to reflect the recently enacted anti-LGBTQI+ legislation.

The Ugandan government introduced an Anti-Homosexuality Act in May that raises the risk that both LGBTQI+ individuals and those perceived to be LGBTQI+ risk prosecution and could be subjected to life imprisonment or death as a result.

If you do choose to travel to Uganda, you are advised to remain with a group of friends when in public, avoid displaying any signs of wealth, keep a low profile, remain vigilant, and don’t physically resist any robbery attempt.

LGBTQI+ travelers are strongly advised to reconsider their travel to Uganda.

Argentina
Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions

Argentina is still considered a safe country and remains on the advisory level with the lowest level of risk to U.S. travelers.

The Level 1 travel advisory to exercise normal precautions in Argentina has been updated to include additional health information.

In certain areas of Argentina, there is a prevalence of Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, Dengue, Typhoid, and Rabies. It is recommended that you are up-to-date on your vaccinations against these diseases before you travel.

Travelers are also reminded that U.S. health insurance does not apply overseas, so you should secure health insurance with overseas coverage before you travel.

Denmark
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Travelers to Denmark continue to be reminded that they should exercise increased caution in the country due to the threat of terrorism.

Terrorist groups continue to consider Denmark a target, and the U.S. government warns that these attacks could occur with little to no warning.

If you are planning to travel to Denmark, then you are advised to be aware of their surroundings, follow instructions issued by local authorities, and monitor local media in case information is released about any new or potential terrorist attacks.

Ecuador
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Travelers to Ecuador continue to be reminded to exercise increased caution in the country. The U.S. government travel advisory for Ecuador has been updated to include new health information.

Ecuador has a level 2 advisory rating due to the risk of civil unrest and crime. Violent crime is common in the country.

Crime rates are higher in some parts of the country than in others, and U.S. travelers are advised to reconsider travel to Guayaquil north of Portete de Tarqui Avenue and not to travel to the south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue, as well as Carchi, Sucumbios, and the northern part of Esmeraldas provinces.

Travelers should be aware that demonstrations for political and economic reasons can occur regularly in Ecuador. Travelers are advised to prepare an emergency plan for situations where they are involved in a demonstration or fall victim to crime.

Dominican Republic
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

U.S. travelers to the Dominican Republic are advised to exercise increased caution due to high levels of crime.

Common crimes in the country include violent crimes, such as armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault.

The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for tourists. The development of a professional tourist police corps and the introduction of a 911 system means that the popular tourist areas of the country are safer than urban areas like Santo Domingo.

If you do travel to the Dominican Republic, you are advised to be aware of your surroundings, hide any obvious signs of wealth, and follow the advice of your resort and tour operators regarding local safety and security concerns.

Bolivia
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

The U.S. government travel advisory has been updated with new health information but remains at level 2. Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution.

This is because of the risk of civil unrest in Bolivia. Demonstrations, strikes, and roadblocks can occur at any time in the country.

Travelers are also advised not to travel to the Chapare region, and to reconsider travel to the Yungas region, due to the levels of crime.

If you do visit Bolivia, you are advised to make sure your health insurance covers overseas care, and it is strongly recommended that you secure supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medical care in large cities is adequate, but quality can vary, and many medical facilities are not equipped to handle serious medical emergencies.

Peru
Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Travelers visiting Peru are advised to exercise increased caution due to the levels of crime, civil unrest, and the possible risk of kidnapping. This alert has been reissued with updates to crime information.

The crimes that U.S travelers are warned about in Peru include petty theft, carjackings, muggings, assaults, and other violent crimes. Kidnapping is rare but does occur.

The risk of being a victim of crime increases at night in Peru.

Some areas have higher risk levels than others. U.S. travelers are advised not to travel to the Colombian-Peruvian border area, The Valley of the Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), or the Puno region.

If you work for the U.S. government, then you cannot travel to Peru. U.S. government personnel cannot travel freely throughout Peru for security reasons.

Level 3 (Reconsider Travel)

One of the region's most popular destinations, Jamaica is currently listed at Level 3 on the State Department's four-tier travel advisory scale. While visitors are unlikely to encounter any danger in the island's top resort areas, officials ask travelers to reconsider plans due to the threat of crime and highlight specific areas that visitors should avoid, including the following parts of Montego Bay: Canterbury, Flankers, Glendevon, Mount Salem, Norwood, Paradise Heights and Rose Heights.

Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution)

Though not always considered to be a part of the Caribbean, The Bahamas is a sun-kissed tropical island chain that's easily accessed from the mainland U.S. and is currently listed at Level 2 due to crime. Travelers often visit the Bahamas via cruise ships so they're time in the destination may be limited and to major tourist areas, meaning they typically have little to worry about.

Travelers are encouraged to exercise increased caution in Cuba due to crime. "Petty crime is a threat for tourists in Cuba. Also, violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault, sometimes occurs in Cuba," the State Department warned in a November 15 travel advisory update.

The Caribbean's most-visited country continues to be a safe destination for vacationers. The Dominican Republic has remained at Level 2 since October, with officials encouraging travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime. "The development of a professional tourist police corps, institution of a 911 system in many parts of the country, and a concentration of resources in resort areas means these tend to be better policed than urban areas like Santo Domingo," the State Department points out.

The islands of Turks and Caicos are another safe vacation option this spring and summer as officials only advise visitors to exercise increased caution due to potential crime.

Hong Kong: Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution

Hong Kong has been taking over headlines lately by coming up with creative ways to become a powerhouse in the tourism industry again.

After implementing very strict COVID rules, they have loosened up and want to invite the world over to see what an awesome place it is.

If you have plans to book a trip to Hong Kong any time soon, travelers should be aware the State Dept. has issued a Level 2 travel advisory.

All this means is to make yourself more aware of certain scenarios when visiting. In particular, Hong Kong does not recognize dual citizenship.

There have been political demonstrations held lately where arrests have been made. Those who are of both Chinese and U.S. descent may be targeted for further questioning and even detainment.

The Hong Kong SAR government does not take kindly to outsiders taking part in these demonstrations. It is best to steer clear of large gatherings forming in the streets.

Some important tips to stay safe in Hong Kong:

  • Keep a low profile
  • Do not take photographs of demonstrations or police offers
  • If you are detained, request to contact the U.S. Consulate

Macau: Level 3 – Reconsider Travel

Macau has become more than just its gambling hub reputation, as it is one of the hottest destinations in Asia right now.
However, with the recent advisory from the State Dept., it is being advised to reconsider traveling to Macau.

Some of the reasons behind the latest update are arbitrary enforcement of their laws, as well as the U.S.’s lack of ability to provide certain consular services to those in need.

Like Hong Kong, Macau does not recognize dual nationalities. It’s important for those of multi-national descent to be extra vigilant of their whereabouts to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

Demonstrations have also been held in Macau, so it is best to avoid them if you are in the area.

Some important tips for staying safe in Macau:

  • Stay up to date by reading the State Department’s travel information on Macau
  • Avoid large crowds/gatherings
  • Always be aware of your surroundings

Mainland China: Level 3 – Reconsider Travel

Needless to say, China has been a hot topic in the news for over 3 years straight. Without rehashing details we are all aware of for the past few years, it’s unfortunate all the talk about China ignores some truly astonishing destinations in this massive country.

A big reason for that is that China has not been welcoming tourists for quite some time. Although, they have eased up on some entry restrictions.

For those who decide to make their way to China, the State Department is concerned with wrongful detentions and arbitrary enforcement of their laws.

Those who are detained may not have access to U.S. assistive services and may not even be informed of their alleged crime.

Another key concern is potential “exit bans”, where the U.S. would have restricted ability to assist U.S. citizens being faced with forceful tactics while unable to leave.

The U.S. also warns against speaking negatively of the country on any social media platforms or through any messages on your computer or phone. Inspections of your person and belongings can occur at random.

Those of Chinese or U.S. descent need to be extra watchful of their actions, as they can also become a target, just like in Macau and Hong Kong.

Some important tips to stay safe in China:

  • Do not take drugs before or after arriving, as it can result in immediate arrest, harsh fines, or deportation
  • Avoid demonstrations
  • Enroll in STEP

Stay away from Mexico how many times do people have to be warned

Last month, two brothers and one of their friends crossed from the United States into Mexico to explore Baja California's famous surf breaks. Pictures posted online by one of the brothers, Callum Robinson, 33, show the men gazing out at the ocean with coffee, enjoying street tacos and relaxing with beers on a roof deck.

After camping on a remote stretch of beach south of Ensenada, the friends were supposed to check into an Airbnb in Rosarito Beach last weekend. But they never arrived. The last time their relatives heard from the men was April 27.

Their disappearance in one of Mexico's most violent states has triggered a massive search involving local authorities, the FBI and the Mexican marines.
