Florida State caught with NIL violations

A “major punishment” is losing your OC for 3 games ?!? Seems pretty light to me - but hey that’s the NCAA for ya right there. Oh - wait - maybe they mean not permitting the dumbass funding this to affiliate with the school for 3 years is the major punishment.

Seriously - state of college sports these days. You are STUPID enough to get caught offering a 18 year old kid $150k “salary” to play for your school - thinking he isn’t immediately going to brag/try to get more elsewhere - and then when you can’t deny away the evidence - this slap on the wrist isn’t a the punishment.

No loss of scholarships - no forfeiture of wins - no probation - just a 3 game paid break for your OC against what will probably be 3 games vs community colleges. And it’s not like FSU has this sterling reputation or has never been in this position before - they just can’t hire anyone smart enough to not get caught. Happens everywhere - but at least in the SEC they are smart enough to not get caught.

How is FSU suing the ACC to leave going to make the move over to SEC when they are still clearly amateur at paying kids off?

Are you not allowed to contact a player in the portal?

"The prospect, who was not named by the NCAA but was reported by The Associated Press to be Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims, removed his name from the transfer portal shortly after the meeting and remained at his previous school."

IF they have submitted their name and been accepted into the transfer portal - and unless there is some sort of “blackout” period - Yes, other teams can contact that player.

Don’t know the whole story here - guessing player had submitted - but not been accepted by the portal as transfer eligible (which would have been easily verifiable online by any school) either the player is on the list - or you are barred from contact with them as they are committed elsewhere.

Just because you submit your name - you don’t instantly become a free agent. There is a verification process here I know - but no idea how long it takes to clear - at least for non-graduate players. I am thinking graduate players are automatic approved upon submission.

I see.

Do you think this investigation affected FSU's score in the Orange Bowl?

I suspect being seriously outmanned and playing a pissed off team with a statement to make affected them more.

2 teams disappointed to have been in that game.

Georgia showed up ready to show why they belonged in the top 4 - FSU forgot to show up - similar to the Buckeyes - they had more guys thinking about their pro days and draft stock than about winning a game.

College football is a mess

Yeah, this was bound to happen and will happen more and more.

Collecting evidence is the issue.

There is dark money on every campus with under the table illegal offers to athletes BEFORE they decide where to go.

This is a no no that will be nearly impossible to enforce, let alone eradicate, with the current NIL rules.

A cap on NIL amount should be implemented.

But then they get creative.

Boosters can offer the athlete a job on campus and rules used to state that the job had to pay what everyone else made at the same job.

They tossed those rules so now a booster can get an athlete highered to work, say, in the student store and instead of making what everyone else makes he makes 10k per hour and works one hour a week or month.

They wrote in so many loopholes they were asking for dark money and activity to spring up.

They opened up a can of worms.

Can't believe there are alumni so dedicated to their football squad that they offer crazy money for one player so they can do well. I get the return on investment for the best programs, but so many other just end up having a good season out of it all.

We had a cap on it for a century I thought - 0.

How well did that work out with people not getting around it ?

If teams can hire experts to show them how to work around the NFL cap - every power 5 school is going to have a team of accountants showing how to bypass the NCAAs cap.

Or maybe just bring in Aunt Becky…
