"Former captain David Backes signed a one-day contract with the St. Louis Blues on Thursday to retire with the franchise.

The 37-year-old from Minneapolis hangs up his skates having scored 248 goals and 313 assists in 965 regular season games over 15 seasons with the Blues, Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks.

St. Louis selected Backes in the second round, 62nd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, and he spent the first decade of his NHL career with the club. He was named captain in 2011.

Backes signed with the Bruins as a free agent in 2016 and was traded to the Ducks in February 2020. He recorded three goals and one assist in 15 games with the Ducks this past season.

A two-time Olympian, Backes earned a silver medal for the U.S. at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.
