So 4/5 marks the date of 2 very prominent suicides for the faces of the grunge era of music.
Layne Staley was no surprise - he’d been struggling for a while and sadly written off by those who had profited off him. He was a shell of his former self when found - ruled accidental, but the few he remained in contact with hint it was a suicide. After all - he knew exactly what he was doing by this point and mixing coke with his heroin wasn’t something he was likely to do.
Kurt on the other hand remains among the most controversial suicides ever in history. People who are pondering suicide don’t generally invite someone to watch and there’s no question his dealer and friend/nanny was there around the time of death. Both deny being present at the time of death - but seems odd…a clearly struggling rock star with a past suicide attempt being left alone by his personal assistant with a 16 gauge bought a few day before just doesn’t add up.
Was he left with his dealer by Dewitt ? Seems plausible - he knew shit was about to go down and didn’t want to be around. Hard to imagine his dealer killed him in cold blood - maybe it was a suicide and she was present - maybe they argued over the gun. Who knows - clearly no one’s talking now. The circumstantial evidence though is there - only thing I feel confident in saying is his wife had no part in it (she was dealing with her own struggles and no where near capable of masterminding a murder for hire plot that remains unsolved). Junkies aren’t generally deep thinkers and to plan this one you had to put some serious thought into it.
