Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals takes place tonight with the series tied 2-2, following the Oilers’ age-defying comeback from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 overtime victory.

The Panthers had outscored the Oilers 9-1 over a span of four periods, until Edmonton finally got a kick in the behind, turned things around, and somehow avoided falling into a 3-1 series hole—heading back home with the series level.

Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

Saturday, June 14, 2025 – 08:00 PM EDT at Rogers Place

It’s Been a Humdinger

This has been one of the best NHL Finals in a long time. With three of the first four games going to overtime, we’ve seen just about everything you could want in a playoff series.

We’ve witnessed a 6-1 blowout, total domination, and goal-filled thrillers—every single game so far has featured 7 or more goals, with a combined total of 32 goals through four games. There have been full-on brawls, plenty of power plays, and non-stop drama.

The Panthers’ goaltender, Sergei Bobrovsky, has been sublime. Considering the firepower on the Oilers’ top two lines, he’s done remarkably well to allow just 14 goals across the series. Bobrovsky has made 30+ saves in each game of the Finals.

This is exactly what a Stanley Cup Final should be—both teams leaving everything on the ice. It helps that this is a rematch of last season’s Finals, which went to Game 7. We wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if this year’s series does the same.

Oilers Goaltending

During Connor McDavid’s time with the Oilers, goaltending has consistently been one of the team’s biggest weaknesses. They’ve somewhat addressed it with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, but neither has matched the level of Bobrovsky for Florida.

Skinner has gone 7-6 this postseason with a 2.99 goals-against average. Pickard (not Pickford) has posted a 2.69 GAA in limited action. Skinner began the playoffs as the starter but was pulled in favor of Pickard. After Pickard got injured, Skinner returned, only to be pulled again in Game 4.

At this point, it’s unclear who will get the start tonight. However, given that Pickard came in with the Oilers down 3-0 and helped backstop them to a 5-4 overtime win—allowing just one goal—it seems likely he’ll get the nod between the pipes tonight.

Edmonton vs. Florida Trends & Facts

  • The Panthers have been made an underdog 20 times this season and won 50% of those games.
  • The moneyline set for this contest implies a 48.8% chance of victory for the Panthers.
  • When playing as a moneyline favorite with odds of -125 or shorter the Oilers have won 65% of those games.
  • Based on this contest’s moneyline, the Oilers have an implied win probability of 55.6%.
  • The total has gone over in 9 of Florida’s last 10 games on the road.
  • The total has gone over in 6 of Edmonton’s last 6 games when playing at home against Florida.

The Pick

With each passing game in this series, we keep thinking an under is due—but it hasn’t come close, with 32 total goals scored so far. That’s why we believe the +100 NHL betting odds on over 6.5 goals tonight offer solid value at the top-rated sportsbooks.

These two teams are 4-0 to the over in this series, averaging 8.0 goals per game. On top of that, 8 of their last 10 head-to-head meetings have also gone over 6.5 goals.

One potentially good omen for Oilers backers: when a road team ties the Stanley Cup Final at 2-2, they’ve gone 6-1 in the following game. Edmonton sits at -125 on the moneyline, but we find more value in their -1.5 puck line at +220—a tempting play if they stay hot in front of goal.
