- The track is a tree-lined test of long, accurate hitting where getting in the fairways is paramount for the approach shot, which can be amongst the lengthiest on the PGA Tour at just under 200 yards.
- The weather in Ohio this week is set fair, as is often the case this time of the year for the Memorial Tournament.

Why You Can’t Forget Patrick This Week
Long-term readers of my golf column have pleasant memories of betting on Patrick Cantlay at the Memorial Tournament over recent years.
As a rule of thumb, Cantlay is a +EV bet at Muirfield Village at prices of (+2000) or better, and readers will remember we have followed that rule to profit nicely, backing him nearly every year, even in 2021 and 2019, when he won here.
However, the thirty-two-year-old Californian has suffered a tournament win drought dating back to the 2022 BMW Championship that stretches back over fifty PGA tournaments, which is a very fallow period for an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour.

Despite the lack of trophies, Cantlay’s consistency means he is still the world #15. There have been encouraging recent signs in his play that an elusive return to the Winner’s Circle might just be around the corner. His long game has looked razor sharp most of the year, and it is not coincidental that two of his best putting displays this year have resulted in top 5 finishes.
The affinity he has for the course is illustrated by three other top 7 finishes, making him an absolute lock this week for the top 10 market.

Can the Fitzy Fight Take Flight?
The last twelve months have been a serious fight of form for the analytical Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick.
The 2022 U.S. Open champion has struggled since finishing 5th here last year. In fact, last week’s 8th at the PGA Championship (which built on some promise from the Truist Championship the week prior) was his first top 10 finish since. The thirty-year-old has always had a very technical approach to all he does, but that does not take away from what a high-functioning player he is at his best and a multiple winner all over the world, as well as a major champion.
Certainly, Muirfield Village has always shown his neat strategic tee-to-green game off to great effect with three top 10 finishes in his last five Memorials. So, if his confidence is on the rise, this looks like the perfect week for him to get back in the winner’s circle.
Many PGA Tour golfers struggle with the actual winning of golf tournaments, which, given the consistency of world #1 Scottie Scheffler, has never been harder. However, Matt Fitzpatrick has never lacked the class and belief to win on the biggest stages.
