Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets

Tuesday, July 06, 2021 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field

The Milwaukee Brewers will travel to Citi Field on Tuesday night for the second game of their National League series clash versus the New York Mets.Milwaukee is looking to get back on the right track after having its 11-game winning streak snapped in the series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.  Let’s analyze this Tuesday’s night showdown and keep cashing our MLB picks!

The Brewers have built a seven-game advantage in the National League Central standings with a 51-34 overall record. Despite dropping six of its last 10 games, New York also comes into the series in first place in the NL East standings with a 43-37 record, 3.5-games ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves. Can the Mets bounce back with a win at home versus the Brewers on Tuesday night?

New York will be counting on right-handed ace Jacob deGrom in the second game of their three-game tilt versus the Brewers. deGrom spun seven innings of three-run ball with 14 strikeouts and no walks in his last start versus Atlanta but still ended up with a no-decision on the night. The Mets’ right-hander has been ramping up his workload since coming off of the injured list and topped the 90-pitch mark for the first time since late-April. He comes in with a 7-2 overall record to go along with a sparkling 0.95 ERA and 0.54 WHIP in 14 starts.

At age 33, the Mets’ ace is putting together one of the best seasons in MLB history. Through 85 innings, he’s fanned 14.40 batters and walked just 1.16 batters per nine innings of work, career-best marks in both categories. deGrom has also been missing more bats than ever before. The Mets’ right-hander is generating swinging strikes a career-high 21.7 percent of the time and opposing hitters have swung at 43.4 percent of his pitches outside of the strike zone, a sign that his stuff has become even more deceptive this season. Of course, averaging a career-high 99.1 mph on his heater hasn’t hurt either.

In eight career starts versus Milwaukee, deGrom is 3-3 with a 4.80 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. However, he’s performed well at Miller Park, where he is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in three road starts. Per Baseball Savant, current Brewers are batting a healthy .294 in 90 plate appearances off of the Mets’ ace ahead of Tuesday’s contest. Milwaukee is scheduled to counter with veteran left-hander Brett Anderson for his ninth start of the season.

The 33-year-old will be looking to rebound after suffering his fourth straight loss last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Anderson gave up three runs on five hits in just 1 ⅓ innings of work for his shortest start of the season. He comes in with a 2-5 overall record and a 4.69 ERA but has completed more than five innings just twice in eight starts.

While Anderson doesn’t blow away hitters with his fastball, he’s found success by inducing weak contact and keeping the ball on the ground. The Brewers’ southpaw doesn’t hurt himself either. He has struck out 5.81 batters and walked just 2.81 batters per nine innings of work while posting a ground ball rate of 55.2 percent, which ranks seventh in the MLB among pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched this season.

The 13-year-veteran has never faced the Mets. According to Baseball Savant, current Mets are batting .267 in 42 plate appearances off of the Brewers’ left-hander coming into Tuesday’s matchup.DeGrom has been getting better with age. His average fastball velocity and strikeout rate have increased in each of the last five seasons and he comes in posting career-high marks in nearly every category.

While some of that has been due to good luck (.209 BABIP), deGrom also owns a 136:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season. However, he’s had some problems in his career with the Brewers, and with Anderson fresh off of his shortest start of the season, there should be some value on Milwaukee in this spot. Take the Brewers to come out on top at home in this NL battle at Miller Park. Now you are ready to find the winners on the MLB lines.
