Scottie Scheffler (+450)

The world no #1 arrives in North Carolina on the back of a record-breaking week at TPC Craig Ranch, where he won the C.J. Cup in his home state of Texas.

The twenty-eight-year-old opted out of last week’s Truist Championship and arrives at Quail fresh.  The only negative would be his lack of course experience compared to many of the principles.

Rory McIlroy (+500)

The Northern Irishman is challenging Scheffler for favouritism this week, hot on the heels of his Masters triumph to land the Grand Slam.

Golf fans and bettors will be curious to see how the thirty-six-year-old reacts.  Will it be that the floodgates open to more major championship success?  Or will there be a letdown week after the subconscious sigh of relief that he finally won his fifth major after a barren spell lasting over a decade?

Bryson DeChambeau (+1200)

The reigning U.S. Open arrives with his best game intact after winning the LIV event in Korea on the back of his impressive effort at the Masters when not in possession of his best game.

There is more juice in the YouTube star’s price than Scottie and Rory.

Ludvig Aberg (+1600)

The talented Swede has had an interrupted season, but his Genesis Invitational win and Masters effort illustrate he is still close to the pinnacle of the sport despite the stop/start 2025.

Xander Schauffele (+2000)

The reigning PGA champion is getting back into the swing of things, two months off due to a rib injury, and his ball striking is getting progressively better with each week.  Recent defending champions have respectable records at this major championship with Brooks Koepka defending in 2019.

Justin Thomas (+2000)

Justin Thomas was the last winner of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in 2017 and is hugely respected coming off his Heritage win on his penultimate start and a strong week at the Truist.

Jon Rahm (+2000)

The Spaniard divide’s opinion after his defection to LIV at the start of 2024 has rendered his major championships forgettable.  Has very little experience of Quail Hollow and looks the weakest of the top 8 principles.

Collin Morikawa (+2000)

Collin Morikawa is a previous PGA champion in 2020 and arrives here in consistent form, but sadly winning has become illusive for the twenty-eight-year-old Californian in recent times.

Another player with little experience around Quail Hollow and passed over at the prices.

Final Thoughts and PGA Championship pick

What a week we have in store at Quail Hollow with the undisputed top three players in golf, arriving in North Carolina in their best form.

Rory McIlroy’s course form is outstanding with four wins, which is something Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau don’t have to draw on.  If Rory McIlroy is not emotionally drained from his Masters win, he must be the pick between him and Scheffler, but for value we are going away from all three.

The attention of the world’s media will be on those three which may help the chances of two players just below them in the betting, those two are Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele.  Thomas after his Heritage win will be the fourth player in the media gaze this week, especially after a decent showing last week at the Truist Championship but he is a confidence/momentum type of guy.

Turn the clock 12 months and Xander Schauffele came into the 2024 PGA Championship with the weight of the world on his shoulders, having lost the week previous, funnily enough at Quail Hollow, in the Wells Fargo to Rory McIlroy when surrendering a 4-shot lead.

Schauffele had the unwanted tag of the “unofficial best player never to have won a major” and turned that perception on its head, when fending off strong last day challenges from DeChambeau and Hovland to win.

Two months later, Schauffele’s floodgates were open as he added the British Open.  This year he arrives under the radar and twice the price, so he is the pick from the top of the betting market at Bovada’s price of (+2000).
