The Padres will give Nick Martinez his first start in the majors since 2017. After pitching in Japan and the Olympics, Martinez will get his shot but how will he perform against the San Francisco Giants? Let’s see what the MLB odds for this matchup tell us!
Monday, April 11, 2022 – 09:45 PM EDT at Oracle Park
The San Diego Padres have started the season 3-1 in a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
However, things are about to get a bit harder when they face the San Francisco Giants, on the road.
The Giants also won their first series against the Marlins, 2-1, and will now get the chance to play a divisional team for the first time this season.
San Francisco will send out left-hander Alex Wood. Wood had a 3.65 xFIP last season with 25.9% strikeouts and 6.8% walks on the season.
He induced 48.6% ground balls and had moments last season where he was unhittable. Lefties hit a wOBA of .296 with an ISO of just .1004 while righties hit a wOBA of .283 with an ISO of .130.

It was hard to hit for power against Wood last season and knowing how poor the Padres were last season against lefties, nobody would be surprised if Wood has a solid game on the mound tonight.
Last season the Padres’ projected lineup hit a .142 ISO with a wOBA of .317 against lefties. San Diego only struck out 18.3% of the time against lefties with the projected lineup but the lack of power is the main concern.
Only Wil Myers had an above-average ISO number against lefties last season, with a .200 ISO. Meanwhile, Nick Martinez will get a chance to start in the Padres’ rotation this season.
Martinez pitched in Japan and the Olympics and has now made it back into the MLB. It’s a great story for the right-handed thrower. He’s 31-years-old and has plenty of baseballs left in his tank.
In Japan, Martinez went 21-22 with a 3.02 ERA through three seasons. He struck out 7.1 batters per nine innings and walked 2.8 batters per nine innings.

Only time will tell if Martinez is capable of sticking around in the majors. In his last season, he went 3-8 in 2017 with a 5.66 ERA along with a WHIP of 1.37 in 23 games and 111.1 innings.
Martinez will have a tough lineup to pitch against. The Giants smacked righties dating back to last season and continue to platoon guys for matchup advantages.
The Giants' projected lineup has an ISO of .201 with a wOBA of .337. Martinez could earn a solid amount of strikeouts against the Giants but overall will struggle to earn ground balls.
If you like rooting for the underdog, you’re going to want to bet on Martinez. He’s overcome plenty to get back into a Major League rotation.
However, the Padres usually struggle against lefties, and Wood is one of the better lefties in the game. For our MLB picks, take the Giants, at home, at -145.
