Super Bowl LVI Odds Update Ahead of NFL Week 8 (Archive)

Originally published on October 26, 2021

With the NFL season approaching Week 8, it’s a perfect opportunity to analyze the ebbs and flows in the betting market. We are going to look at the movers and shakers that have shortened in price as they’ve enhanced their Super Bowl LVI credentials while considering a bet on one of the major drifters’.

The defending Super Bowl champions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been rock solid at the top of the market (+500) with Tom Brady just completing a phenomenal 600 touchdown passes.

Super Bowl LVI Odds (Best Price Update)

The Biggest Movers in the Super Bowl Market Were Never on the Cards

Sunday night’s facile victory over Superb Bowl LVI no-hopers, the Houston Texans took the Cardinals to 7-0 in the NFC West as Kyler Murray’s brilliance at quarterback leads the way.

From an opening show of +4000, the only unbeaten team is now down to +850 which is a huge price regression in just seven weeks. AJ Green’s presence has undoubtedly created a wealth of options for Kyler Murray and the wide receivers.

There’s a way to go before they win the division and a tough short week ahead with a Thursday night game against Green Bay Packers. Regardless, if they get Kyler Murray to the playoffs healthy, he has the unexposed star quality that could take down the Super Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals price feels way too short at +850 but let’s not rule out revisiting their chances in the playoffs.

The Buffalo Bills Are Starting to Look Way Too Bullish in the Market

Many pundits thought the Buffalo Bills would regress a little in the current season, but the current best price of +700 at Bovada from an opening +1200 seems something of an overreaction to their 4-2 record.

They look like a flat track bully type of team, who like it all their own way and will be susceptible in the playoffs when the fear of elimination kicks in subconsciously to the players and staff.

Dallas Cowboys Looking Realistic Contenders

Yes, there’s often a disproportionate amount of money and optimism for ‘America’s favourite team’ in the betting markets but the regression from an opening tissue of +3000 to +1100 looks justified.

It’s possibly a slight overreaction and I have them nearer +1500 in price, given they lead the league in turnovers which are deemed a team to be performing above expectancy.

We are splitting hairs though with the Jason Garrett era now consigned to history, the team looks to have moved on psychologically and the future looks bright so don’t let me put you off backing the Cowboys but the +1100 at Bovada is a little short for me.

Lesser Expectations Could Make Kansas City the Chiefs of the Super Bowl LVI

Perennially, recent seasons have seen Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs dominate the AFC but this year it’s far from the same scenario with their 3-4 record.

Sunday night’s pummeling at the Tennessee Titans when the Chiefs failed to score a touchdown with Patrick Mahones as quarterback for the first time, will either be the breaking or making of their season. The coaching staff have much to ponder in the coming days while the playing staff have time to gather resolve with a long week until next Monday Night’s Football game against struggler’s New York Giants.

Scoring is not the problem normally for Andy Reid’s team, it never has been, but a leaky defence with a multitude of turnovers and 9 interceptions have undermined their chances so far. With their record, there’s no guarantee they will make the playoffs or indeed win the AFC West for what would be a remarkable sixth year in succession.

Having to concentrate on winning matches in the present without being able to look to the future means there’s ‘no expectations’ but rather a need to focus on one match at a time.

Steve Spagnuolo as a defensive coordinator, isn’t the worst, he has two Super Bowl rings over a decade apart, illustrating his ability and more importantly, he’s known to work well with Andy Reid. Let’s be honest, the Chiefs have never had the greatest defence but this season, it’s close to derailing their Super Bowl LVI chances.

The linebacker Willie Gay Jr. is an interesting name to me, having been the second-round draft pick in 2020. His full return, hopefully, is imminent especially after Sunday’s interception, and it could be the spark that’s needed to refocus the defence. The blessing in disguise for bettors is the drift in price to +1100 at BetOnline from the original favourites price of +500.

Quarterbacks make the difference, none are better than Patrick Mahomes, so if Kansas City Chiefs can put a run of wins together, confidence would quickly return at Arrowhead, making them Super Bowl LVI contenders once again so take the chance at +1100 with BetOnline now while you can.
