Phillies vs. Mets Sunday Night Baseball Preview and Free Pick (Archive)

Originally published on May 1, 2022

The New York Mets will look to finish off another series to start the MLB season. The Mets haven’t lost a series yet this season and could win another one tonight behind their ace pitcher.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

Sunday, May 1, 2022 – 07:08 PM EDT at Citi Field

Max Scherzer

That ace pitcher is Max Scherzer, who will take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the third game of the series. The Mets won the first game but the Phillies got revenge in the second game. Now it all comes down to a matchup tonight.

Scherzer has a 1.80 ERA with a 3-0 record to start his Mets career. He’s got a 3.46 xFIP with 35.1% strikeouts. Walks are a bit high to begin the season but ultimately, Scherzer has been near unhittable.

The Phillies have a very solid lineup but that same lineup only scored one run in five innings against Scherzer earlier this season.

The Phillies’ projected lineup has a .182 ISO and wOBA of .326. However, the Phillies are only walking 8.4% of the time and striking out 22.8% of the time.

Zach Eflin

On the other hand, Zach Eflin will get the call for the Phillies. He’s yet to win a game for the Phillies with an 0-1 record along with a 3.45 ERA. Eflin hasn’t been bad but still has a 4.81 xFIP with just 18.8% strikeouts.

Lefties have a .336 wOBA and ISO of .258 against Eflin. Therefore, the Mets should have the advantage in this game. New York will have at least five lefties in the lineup including Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor, and Jeff McNeil, who have all started the season at a very good rate when it comes to ISO and wOBA.

Prediction

The Mets haven’t lost a series yet this season. We’re in May. Now Max Scherzer is on the mound to keep that streak alive. For an ESPN night game on Sunday, Mets fans will be out there in support.

The Mets already beat the Phillies in a series on the road but in that series, the Mets never faced Eflin. Many batters in the Mets lineup have seen Eflin plenty, however. Robinson Cano has a homer, Pete Alonso has a homer, and Starling Marte has a homer against Eflin.

My MLB pick is the Mets to win the rubber match of the series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball by multiple runs.
