Bundesliga Matchday 29 Preview and Best Bets (Archive)

Originally published on April 6, 2022

The Bundesliga returns features prominently on the soccer betting board this weekend. On the docket are several key matchups to spot, some of which are the subject of this soccer preview column.

So, without too much preamble, let’s start analyzing some of these fixtures and examining the soccer odds simultaneously.

VfL Wolfsburg vs. Arminia Bielefeld

Saturday, April 9, 2022 – 09:30 AM EDT at Volkswagen Arena

It’s crunch time for VfL Wolfsburg as they look to avoid Bundesliga relegation down the stretch. Wolfsburg is sat pretty in 13th place in the league with a 9-4-15 mark and 31 points. Only four points separate the hosts from the drop zone, where, ironically, Arminia Bielefeld currently sits as the 16th ranked team with a 5-11-12 mark and 26 points. It’s fair to say, Bielefeld is equally desperate to fight for survival in Germany’s top-flight league.

The premium on the three points up for grabs couldn’t be any greater as it means safety to both teams, at least for another week. Wolfsburg is coming off a heavy 3-0 defeat to Augsburg while Bielefeld settled on a 1-1 draw with Stuttgart in the last lap around Bundesliga.

Neither side strikes a particularly convincing pose as far as form is concerned, but it’s arguable that Bielefeld are worse off right now than Wolfsburg. Bielefeld is 0-1-4 in its last five fixtures. Bielefeld can’t seem to buy a win no matter how hard they try. Wolfsburg are riding a three-game losing streak, but two of those have come against top-tier competition.

Oddsmakers tip this matchup with the hosts quite confidently, pricing the home win anywhere between -140 and -150 on the soccer odds board. By any measure, the hosts should come up trumps.

SpVgg Greuther Furth vs. Borussia Monchengladbach

Saturday, April 9, 2022 - 09:30 AM EDT at Sportpark Ronhof | Thomas Sommer

Greuther Furth are leaking points like no other team in the Bundesliga. Ever since the start of the season, Furth has had almost exclusive ownership of the bottom place, and now, with the season winding down, relegation is all but confirmed.

Furth ranks 18th in the league with 16 points after stringing together a 3-7-18 mark on the season. They’re ten points behind Hertha and Arminia in the standings – a substantial gap to close by any measure. That said, recent form has seen a slight upsurge as Furth has managed to hold Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt to scoreless draws.

Furth is set to face Borussia Monchengladbach at Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer in what is expected to be an interesting Bundesliga game. Indeed, the soccer betting markets are tipped wholeheartedly with the visitors, despite their own struggles this season.

Borussia Monchengladbach ranks 12th in the league with a 9-7-12 mark and 34 points. They’re eight points clear of the drop zone, but they can’t flirt with disappointments or risk sinking further. Last weekend, Borussia Monchengladbach drew 1-1 against Mainz 05.

When these two sides met in Bundesliga action last, Monchengladbach ran away with the 4-0 victory in November. With home advantage on their side this time, the hosts should come through again as the choice soccer pick.

RB Leipzig vs. TSG Hoffenheim

Sunday, April 10, 2022 - 01:30 PM EDT at Red Bull Arena

RB Leipzig and TSG Hoffenheim round out the weekend’s Bundesliga action when they collide at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. As per top-rated sportsbooks, it’s one of the most tightly projected games on the soccer odds board with angles for profit on both sides of the coin.

RB Leipzig is sitting pretty in fourth place in the Bundesliga table with a 14-6-8 record and 48 points. Hoffenheim isn’t too far behind, in sixth place with a 13-5-10 record and 44 points. Only four points separate these two rivals in the race for European qualification spots, reserved for those that finish in the top six.

The hosts come into this game in fine form, underscored by a signature 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on the road. Indeed, the surprising win not only turned the soccer betting markets on their heads, but it gave league leaders Bayern Munich an important boost in the title race. Bayern Munich now has a nine-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund in the table.

Hoffenheim have seen their form take a step back in recent weeks with back-to-back losses to Hertha Berlin and Bochum. Those have been costly to Hoffenheim’s bid for a top-six finish this season, especially with Union Berlin closing the gap in the table last weekend to three points after beating FC Cologne 1-0 at home.

The betting value in this game rests with the hosts, who will be keen to keep the momentum going this weekend. Hoffenheim failed to impress last weekend against Bochum and things could go from bad to worse quickly.
