2022 Charleston Open Picks for April 10 (Archive)

Originally published on April 10, 2022

Two women remain vying for 500 ranking points and the winner’s trophy here at the Charleston Open. Belinda Bencic and Ons Jabeur will meet today in a highly anticipated match. Let’s take a look at the WTA odds to find the winning WTA pick.

Ons Jabeur vs. Belinda Bencic

Sunday, April 10, 2022 – 01:30 PM EDT at Credit One Stadium

Ons Jabeur

Ons Jabeur got off to a slow start in the semifinal against Amanda Anisimova, dropping the first set 2-6. She stormed back to win the second set 6-1. And in the third, she was down 1-3, 0-40 but she dug deep and was able to pull off the comeback to secure the 3rd set 6-4.

Ons Jabeur is a master of changing pace and she kept Anisimova from getting comfortable by constantly mixing power shots with her defensive shots. Jabeur served well to help her cause. Overall it was an excellent win for Jabeur against one of the most talented young players on the WTA tour.

This was the first match here in Charleston that Ons Jabeur did not win 6-3, 6-2. Jabeur has spent less than five hours on the court so far in this tournament. Jabeur hopes to put forth one more winning performance today. But her path will not be easy against Belinda Bencic. Jabeur has a 1-3 record in WTA finals.

She made three finals last year, only winning one. Jabeur was the champion in Birmingham last June after defeating Dasha Kasatkina 7-5, 6-4. In her most recent final, she lost to Garbine Muguruza in Chicago in 3 sets.

Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic has made the first clay-court final of her career after her win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. It is also the first final she has ever made in a tournament held in the United States. Belinda Bencic is 5-8 in finals so far in her career. An interesting anomaly, Bencic has never won a final in straight sets. Bencic's most prestigious title was winning the Olympics in Tokyo.

Belinda Bencic has had some impressive wins this week. She defeated 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, who is the best young prospect on the WTA tour. She also defeated power player Madison Keys and world number three Paula Badosa. After making it to the semifinals in Miami last week, Bencic is playing in excellent form right now, heading into the clay season.

Belinda Bencic was born in Switzerland. Bencic's parents definitely knew what they wanted their daughter to do. Bencic began playing tennis at the age of two. Her parents set her up to train with Swiss tennis great Martina Hingis' mother and coach Melanie Molitor at seven years old. Bencic's whole life has been dedicated to achieving tennis greatness. At age 16, Bencic became the No. 1 ranked junior in the world.

Young Blood

Bencic won the French Open and Wimbledon as a junior player. However, junior success is not always predictive of WTA tour success. Bencic did well to work hard and keep her game developing against top talent.

Bencic made a splash as soon as she started playing professionally. Bencic debuted in the top 100 shortly after turning 17. Her first major success was at the 2014 US Open. She became the youngest quarterfinalist since her idol Martina Hingis in 1997. At 18 years old she made the top 10 in WTA rankings.

Belinda Bencic has accrued much more court time than Ons Jabeur during this week. She has been in court for 9 hours and 44 minutes. It will be interesting to see if the fatigue from the accumulated play is a hindrance to Bencic in this match. So far she has shown no signs of conditioning or fatigue being an issue in her ability to compete.

The Pick

For my tennis pick, I like Ons Jabeur to get the win today. Belinda Bencic loves to redirect her opponent's pace and Jabeur will not give her that. By constantly varying the pace of her shots, she will not allow Bencic to do what she does best, and that is using her opponent's power against her.

Once again, the ability to keep her opponent guessing as to which shot she will receive will prevent Bencic from getting into the natural rhythm in which she likes to play.

Jabeur is adept at preventing opponents from getting too comfortable in long rallies. Jabeur's ability to mix in drop shots with powerful forehands keeps her opponents on their toes. This versatility will come in handy again today against Bencic who is not the most comfortable clay court player. Today's best bet is Ons Jabeur ML.
