How to bet the 2021 Ryder Cup will analyze a different form of golf to normal PGA Tour weeks when we break down the best markets to attack in the match-play team contest. Match-play is all about winning the hole and even if they win by two shots on the one hole it will only count as one up. Friday and Saturday see eight matches of foursomes and fourballs while Sunday’s finale sees all twelve players from each team competing once in a singles match. Whistling Straits is a long course by well-respected designer Pete Dye on the banks of Lake Michigan that has held three major Championships since 2004.

Which Team Will Hold the Advantage?

I’m inclined to believe the United States team will need a fast start in the 43rd Ryder Cup given the mauling they suffered at the hands of Europe in 2018 at Le Golf National, Paris. Back in 1983 Tony Jacklin became an inspirational captain for Europe and made the once one-sided two-yearly renewal into a contest and since has become one of the world’s most iconic sporting events.

To put in perspective the way the wind has changed since, Europe or Great Britain and Ireland as it was only won three times prior dating back to 1927. Since 1985 however, Europe has been the dominating force winning eleven times to the United States five. Tony Jacklin was a positive captain who enlisted Seve Ballesteros as his talisman who roused the troops into battle while in recent years the same mantle has passed to Ian Poulter for Europe.

I envisage the home side has a lot in its favor on day one with the captain, Steve Stricker likely to grasp the advantage by setting the course up to its maximum length while the vocal support for the team amongst Whistling Straits, natural amphitheaters’ will be at fever pitch. For those reasons, I think we can expect the United States to be fired up to go on the B of the bang and be the fastest out of the gates.

The United States historically start fast, have already been together over at Whistling Straits for a few days before this week and any fundamental issues with team spirit shouldn’t surface during the opening day. I expect the United States to finish day 1 in front and advise taking the -125 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)

Padraig Harrington’s Fellow Irishman, Shane Lowry to Be the Difference

I envisage the United States will start the contest strongly, but I don’t expect them to win the Ryder Cup and wrestle the trophy back to America. I think, because of their previous inadequacies in the competition the United States will come under pressure and the weight of expectation might become too much for their players.

One player who I think can be pivotal for the contest is Irishman, Shane Lowry who won the 2019 Open Championship but strangely is making a late debut in the contest at the age of thirty-four. Despite not winning since the Open, Shane Lowry’s game has looked in good shape tee to green for the majority of the year.

His putting has been below his best undermining his ball-striking but this week I’m expecting Shane Lowry to be mustard on and around the greens. Firstly, he’s just become a father and there’s a well-known term called Nappy Factor in golf which has been applied many times to a player winning in the weeks after becoming a father.

That’s one factor in my thinking though as what I’m looking forward to is the Irish connection being crucial as I expect Padraig Harrington to pair Shane Lowry with their other good friend Rory McIlroy and if not Tommy Fleetwood. We’ve all seen Rory McIlroy’s passion for this event like many others from Europe over the years and Tommy Fleetwood too who will be missing Francesco Molinari this time around.

Those potential pairings look to be perfectly suited by Match-play could be pivotal in the whole contest and therefore Shane Lowry’s price to be Top Rookie looks fantastic at +750 BetOnline. f I’m correct, then it’s prudent to have small stakes play on Shane Lowry to be Top Combined Points scorer this week at +2500 with GTbets (visit our GTbets Review) because he could figure in the maximum five matches
