Best MLB Player Props to Consider for May 2 (Archive)

Originally published on May 2, 2022

Eight games around the major leagues with the marquee matchup featuring the red-hot New York Yankees at the Toronto Blue Jays. Here are five MLB player prop picks we like for Monday with odds from BetOnline, one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Monday, May 02, 2022 – 07:07 PM EDT at Rogers Centre

DJ LeMahieu and Bo Bichette

These look like clearly the two best teams in the AL East with the Yankees in first at 16-6 and Toronto second at 15-8. New York’s nine-game winning streak is the longest in the majors this season, while the Jays have won seven of 10.

A reminder that players who aren’t vaccinated for COVID-19 can’t travel to Toronto. There had been speculation that both New York’s Aaron Judge, who has homered in three straight games, and Anthony Rizzo were not vaccinated but now rumors that they since have been. We will have to wait for the official lineups. To be safe, though, I won’t pick a player prop on either of those guys.

It has been a bit of a disappointing season for former batting champion DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees as he’s batting just .299 with two homers, but we like him today against Blue Jays starting pitcher Ross Stripling as LeMahieu has faced him more than any Yankee by far and is 7-for-22. LeMahieu’s hit prop is way too overpriced at -285, so we’ll take him to score a run instead at a much better price.

Young Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette also has gotten off to a slow start with a .214 average, three homers, and 10 RBIs – although he did have a two-run shot in Sunday’s comeback win over Houston. All three of Bichette’s homers this season have either tied the game or given the Jays the lead.

We will roll the dice on another home run today because Bichette is 4-for-8 with two homers in his career against New York starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery

Minnesota Twins vs. Baltimore Orioles

Monday, May 02, 2022 – 07:05 PM EDT at Camden Yards

Byron Buxton

The opener of a four-game series between these clubs, and really I’m just picking the best hitter on the Twins because the worst starting pitcher of any game Monday is surely Baltimore’s Tyler Wells, who is 0-2 with a 5.54 ERA in four starts this season and 2-5 with a 4.37 ERA in his big-league career.

The Twins’ Byron Buxton is among the early AL MVP candidates as he’s hitting .283 with seven homers, 12 RBIs, and 13 runs scored. In Sunday’s win over the Rays, Buxton was 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored, his fifth multi-hit effort in just 14 games.

Buxton is second in the majors in average exit velocity at 97.1 mph, meaning he always hits the ball hard. Eleven of his 15 hits are for extra bases. Buxton hasn’t faced Wells in a regular-season game, but I’m not too worried about that.

MLB Prop Pick: Buxton Over 0.5 Total Bases (-135) with BetOnline

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Miami Marlins

Monday, May 02, 2022 – 06:40 PM EDT at loanDepot park

Pablo Lopez

This MLB game has the lowest total on the MLB odds board Monday at just 6.5 runs and you probably aren’t going to see lower pitching earned run total than 1.5 in any game this year. Yet, that’s how good Miami’s Pablo Lopez has been as he’s 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA (best in the majors) and 0.73 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 23.1 innings. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in three straight outings (18.1 consecutive scoreless innings). Batters are hitting only .160 off him.

I don’t really know how he is doing this as Lopez has a fastball that averages only about 93 mph and is essentially a two-pitch pitcher in fastball and changeup – but that changeup has been money as he has a 33 percent CSW (called strikes + whiffs/ total pitches) on that pitch, which is 8 percent above the average success rate of other pitchers’ changeups.

Some of this might be lucky as Lopez has a .227 BABIP overall, well below the league average of .294. Arizona is last in the majors in batting average at .181, so I doubt the Snakes score more than one run as long as Lopez is in there.
