2022 Miami Open Best Bets for March 23 (Archive)

Originally published on March 23, 2022

The men’s draw kicks off today in Miami. In this tournament, every seeded player has a bye, so today’s action features some lesser-known stars on the show courts.

We do have one big star however to talk about. I looked over the ATP odds to find the winning picks for today.

Maxime Cressy vs. Emil Ruusuvuori

Wednesday, March 23, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Grandstand Court

Maxime Cressy

Maxime Cressy had an excellent start to the 2022 season. Those results have not carried over back in the United States. After an excellent start to the year, Cressy must be disappointed he wasn't able to play better at home. He is 0-3 in the US this season, but all matches have gone 3 sets. Cressy is coming off a loss to Christopher Eubanks in Indian Wells last week.

The French-American has not won an ATP level match since the month of January. Cressy is 9-7 on the year with a hold break percentage of 105.9%. This is buoyed by his 93% hold percentage. His break percentage is a paltry 12.9%. Cressy’s ability to hold serve is the key to his power game.

Emil Ruusuvuori

Emil Ruusuvuori played well here in Miami last season. Ruusuvuori was able to beat Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Mikael Ymer here in this tournament last year. He will be looking to defend his points this season. Ruusuvuori is 10-7 on the year.

He has a hold break percentage of 108.4%. Ruusuvuori is a big server whose style should play well here in Miami. He answered questions about his ability to perform in the heat last year, so conditions shouldn't be an issue for the top player from Finland.

The Pick

Maxime Cressy and Emil Ruusuvuori have played once. It was a Challenger Tournament in 2019. Ruusuvuori won the 3 set match. The Finnish hopes to make it two wins against the French-American here in Miami today.

I like Emil Ruusuvuori to get the win over the slumping Maxime Cressy. After Cressy had an excellent run in January, his form has completely fallen apart. Ruusuvuori is much more consistent and probably has the bigger and better game.

We will take the player with the higher ceiling in better form. Our first play for the ATP Miami open is Emil Ruusuvuori -2.5 games.

Nick Kyrgios vs. Adrian Mannarino

Wednesday, March 23, 2022 - 08:30 PM EDT at Stadium Court

Nick Kyrgios

This match has a complete contrast in styles. Nick Kyrgios is an ultra-talented player who can be kind of lazy. Kyrgios has already announced he is skipping the clay season because he does not want to grind out the long points on the slow surface. The Australian is one of the great tennis what-ifs.

Fans often wonder… what if he had the same drive to win as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer? He would certainly be in the game's top 10 and be a top contender at every tournament. Kyrgios is 5-3 on the year with a hold/break percentage of 115.7%. His hold/break percentage is one of the highest in the ATP.

Adrian Mannarino

Adrian Mannarino is the exact opposite of Kyrgios. He is not tall or athletically gifted like the Australian, but he grinds and plays so hard on every point. Mannarino will not give in, no matter what the scoreline is.

The French is the epitome of a gritty player, and you can always count on him to give his best when he is on the court. Mannarino is 10-9 on the year with a hold/break percentage of 101.9%.

This is a tough match to handicap but it should be exciting to watch. Kyrgios is always a spectacle when he is on the court. The Australian raises his level play against the top players, but can sometimes be lackadaisical against players he should beat.

The Pick

Kyrgios also has no problem acting out. He has been fined multiple times for his on-court behavior. He also had a petulant outburst directed at a fan that made its way around social media in his match against Rafael Nadal. Love him or hate him, Kyrgios is must-see TV for tennis fans. His polarizing personality stands out in a sport of well-behaved, respectable athletes.

I like this match to go over. I think that Mannarino should be able to grind and give Kyrgios some problems. Kyrgios often times will cede return games, knowing that he has a huge advantage in tiebreakers. If this is the case, this match will definitely go over.

A fully motivated Kyrgios will sink this bet. Yet Kyrgios only plays his top-level against a tough opponent. Our second ATP tennis pick for the Miami Open is Nick Kyrgios/Adrian Mannarino to go over 21.5 games.
