Premier League Matchday 2 Preview and Best Bets (Archive)

Originally published on August 20, 2021

We head into the second round of the Premier League this weekend and after top sportsbooks were able to see how some teams shaped up in week one, we can get a slightly better read on matchdays 2’s card. We expect Chelsea and Man Utd to keep up their performances from week one and found a combo bet we love at Villa Park.

Aston Villa vs. Newcastle

Saturday, August 21, 2021 – 12:00 AM EST at Villa Park

Villa felt the fallout of their star Jack Grealish leaving as they fell down 3-0 to Watford on the opening day of the season, things were looking bleak for the team who finished 11th last season. Ultimately, they fought hard and came back to eventually suffer a 3-2 lose.

With that being said they were away from home to a newly promotes side who had their backs up. Newcastle were involved in a six goal thriller on opening day but also suffered a loss as they went down 4-2 to West Ham, a team they usually beat.

We think Villa will bounce back on home soil. They have a strong squad and Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings up front are one of the best strike partners in the country. Theoretically, at least, we will have to see how the season plays out for them.

Newcastle are a very attack-minded team and we believe this should see them get on the scoreboard. Villa to take all three points, over 2.5 goals at Danny Ings to find the back of the net is coming in at +400, this is incredible value in our eyes.

Southampton vs. Manchester United

Sunday, August 22, 2021 – 11:30 AM EST at St. Mary’s Stadium

Man Utd made a statement on matchday 1 with an emphatic 5-1 throbbing of Leeds United. A game in which Bruno Fernandes bagged a hat trick (the first United player to do so on opening day since Lou Macari back in 1977) and Paul Pogba managed a total of four assists.

Southampton, on the other hand, lost 3-1 on home soil to Everton, even though they were leading 1-0 at half time. They now risk opening their Premier League campaign with back-to-back losses for the third season in a row.

United will no doubt look to keep up their strong start to the season. With Fernandes and Pogba seemingly firing on all cylinders, and Southampton’s roster and management no doubt feeling like this is going to be a long season after the loss of star strike Danny Ings.

United should pick up all three points here but at -190 we can’t be getting involved, it’s too short a price, considering their missing five players, arguably three of those are regular starting 11 players. Add in the over 2.5 goals to boost United win and Over 2.5 to soccer odds of +140, Man United should score all three themselves and we see a 3-0 / 2-1 victory for the Red Devils.

Premier League Pick: Manchester United Win +O2.5 Goals (+140) with BetOnline.

Arsenal vs. Chelsea

Sunday, August 22, 2021 – 10:00 AM EST at Emirates Stadium

Not necessarily the sharpest soccer pick this weekend as it seems everybody and their mothers are backing Chelsea to pick up all three points against Arsenal this Sunday. We still believe the odds on Chelsea to win represent some good value at -125. It’s good for as low as -140 in our opinion.

Chelsea are the Champions League winners. They just signed one of the hottest strikers in world football in the form of Lukaku and boast a formidable defense and world-class manager in Thomas Tuchel, who can boast a positive head to head record against Pep Guardiola since his takeover at Chelsea, one of only a few managers to do so.

Lukaku has declared himself fit for the game against Arsenal, we really can’t make an argument for the Gunners, Arteta seems to be losing the dressing room and the fans rapidly and the opening day 2-0 loss to Brentford is one of the worst in the Gunners history.

Chelsea would never have lost to Brentford last week, and that’s the difference between these two teams. Arsenal have no back bone and for that reason, we believe Chelsea should be bet right now at -125. We expect them to go off as low as -190 at the very least come kick-off.

We also think a small bet worth considering is Chelsea win and Btts no as Arsenal don’t really have an out and out goalscorer anymore and with Aubameyang and Lacazzette supposedly in Arteta’s bad books. It can’t be good for anyone in terms of scoring goals, plus Chelsea have a very strong defense. If this game was in Stanford Bridge, we believe Chelsea would be as low as -300 to win.
