Premier League Matchday 1 Preview and Best Bets (Archive)

Originally published on August 12, 2021

Here we go ladies and gentlemen, the Premier League is finally back on our tv screens after just 11 weeks away (although it seemed like much longer). It’s always hard to make predictions on the first games of the season as teams are usually nowhere near their best, and often favorites get caught out.

With that being said we have dug deep this week and locked in some plus money bets that we believe to be good value when looking to bet on this week’s Premier League betting picks.

Manchester United vs. Leeds United

Saturday, August 14, 2021 – 7:30 AM EDT at Old Trafford

For the first time in 50 years, Man Utd and Leeds meet on the opening day of the season. This fixture really all depends on what Man Utd is going to show up. At times last season they looked a bit flat, especially against some of the “lesser teams” last season when they had to come out of their counter-attack stance and get on the front foot.

Leeds are going to come at you no matter what. It’s the way Marcelo Bielsa has always made his teams play football. Leeds would rather lose a game 4-3 than 1-0, if you’re going to win you have to outscore them.

This should be a somewhat open game and when looking back to last season’s meeting at Old Trafford between these two teams, we see United had a decisive 6-2 victory. Although we don’t expect that many goals this time around, we see a Man Utd win and both teams scoring. The current Premier League odds on this is +200 with Intertops (visit our Intertops Review).

Our favorite pick, however, is a little safer and at +100 you can get both teams to score and over 2.5 goals. Just in case of a 2-2 draw or Leeds win. We also fully expect Man Utd to score even if Leeds win.

Burnley vs. Brighton

Saturday, August 14, 2021 – 10:00 AM EDT at Turf Moor

Brighton are in a bit of trouble thus far this season. they have lost their biggest upcoming defender Ben White to Arsenal and have not signed any significant players thus far in the transfer window. We expect this weekend’s away trip to Turf Moore to prove more bad news for Brighton fans as we all know how strong Sean Dyce and Burnley are on home soil, as well as the fact Brighton are without three key players in the form of Lamptey, Brun and Welbeck.

Why are the Seagulls favorite to win away to Burnley with the hosts coming in at +210 on the betting market, with Brighton best priced at +145 ? These odds make zero sense to us and we are backing Burnley to come away with a win on matchday one against this weakened Brighton side.

As well as the fact Burnley have looked strong this preseason, whilst Brighton have failed to score in three of their last four preseason games. Take Burnley to draw no bet at some nice plus money at +110.

Tottenham vs. Manchester City

Sunday, August 15, 2021 – 11:30 AM EDT at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Man City open up the defense of their title in one of two away grounds they were beaten last season. The other being to Brighton just after they wrapped up their title, so they can be forgiven for that one.

Man City have boosted their squad with the overpriced Jack Grealish. However, they are without some key players in the form of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden. We still believe Man City should have just a bit more about them on the opening day as Tottenham are working under new management in the form of former Wolves coach Nuno Santo.

Tottenham are dealing with the Harry Keane transfer saga, as well as a somewhat weak defense. We are looking to take Man City over 1.5 team goals in a Premier League betting combo with Tottenham to pick up at least one yellow card at odds of -110.

Man City should win this game, 2-0 or 2-1 in our opinion. With respect to Tottenham getting a booking, we believe it’s more of a case of when than if. Man City will run rings around Tottenham’s midfield and players will have to commit fouls in order to stumble City’s attacks.

Premier League Pick: Man City TT O1.5 Goals + Tottenham 1+ Card (-110) with BetOnline.
