Division rivals New York Rangers and Pittsburgh meet for the 4th time this season. Pittsburgh will be eager to get a win in this NHL game tonight.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Rangers

Thursday, April 7, 2022 – 07.00 PM EDT at Madison Square Garden

Rangers Looking for Solid Win

The one thing about this Rangers team is that it’s really hard to tell just how good they are. We watch the Colorado Avalanche or the Florida Panthers and we know they are very good, but the Rangers are a different kind of team. They can be completed dominated in games and come away with a win.

They are rarely ever in full control of their game and this is something that will not serve them well in the playoffs. Igor Shesterkin has not been at his best lately either, allowing 2.6 goals per game, which funny enough would still make him the 3rd best GAA in the league.

We believe the Rangers need to start learning how to control games and not win games from the back foot, it works, they have the team to do it, but in a best of seven series in the playoffs, you’re going to get found out pretty quickly.

Are the Penguins Losing Focus?

The Penguins have lost 5 of their previous 7 NHL games. If you thought that wasn’t bad enough, their two victories weren’t exactly overly impressive either. With a 4-3 overtime win against Minnesota and an 11-2 win over a very bad Detroit Red Wings. In fairness, they scored 11 goals and that has to be commended, but their opposition makes it much less impressive.

They have let the Rangers slip four points ahead of them in the division and lost the previous two matchups to them. This really wouldn’t be a nice run of form to enter into the playoffs on.

The good news is Tristan Jarry has been solid all season long allowing just 2.39 goals per game. The 7th best in the league at the time of writing. There is a lot riding on this game, a win for the Rangers would see them go 6 points ahead of the Penguins and that would most likely seal 2nd place for them, especially if the Penguins don’t pick up the peace.

Betting Odds and Current Lines

Moneyline: Both teams have opened up at -110 on the moneyline, which is essentially a pick 'em.

Total: The total for tonight has been set at 5.5, with the Juice on the 'over' at -125. The best odds available on the under are currently +110 at the NHL odds board.

Puck Line: With it being a pick 'em the PK lines are pretty much chalked up the same with both winning -1.5 and coming in at +220.

Betting Predictions

This is not a moneyline game we want to be getting involved in, it’s hard to make a case for value on either side as the odds are bang on the money. However, if we had to factor in that the Penguins kind of need the win more then we will side with them just for that reason.

Our official NHL pick for the game is going to be under 5.5 goals, the Rangers have seen 19 of their 33 home games stay under 6 goals and 50% of the Penguins' road games this season has witnessed under goals.

It’s expected to be a tight matchup on the ice and we are hoping to see the under cash here. Although many recent games at Madison Square Gardens have seen 'over' cash.
