MLB Parlay for April 19: A Bet That Pays (+264) (Archive)

Originally published on April 19, 2022

Editor’s Note: The White Sox vs. Guardians game was postponed on Tuesday afternoon prior to the start of the game.

The top-rated sportsbooks have released their MLB odds for today’s baseball action, and it is large and attractive. Two games, in particular, interest me as worth investing in the White Sox vs. Guardians and the Yankees vs. Tigers. For reasons that I will explain, you should play the total for both games.

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 – 06:10 PM EDT at Progressive Field

Dallas Keuchel

White Sox starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel was originally slated to appear in yesterday's game before it was postponed. He enters today's game with a 5.40 ERA after pitching against Seattle.

Metrics indicate, however, that he performed well in that game. His FIP (like ERA, but factors out fielding) was 3.70. Keuchel did an excellent job of generating soft contact and, after suffering an almost career-worst year in terms of control last season, he avoided walking any batters.

Keuchel is in a great spot tonight because he is pitching in Cleveland's Progressive Field. In this venue, he enjoys a 2.38 ERA in five career starts. This year, he is going up against a Guardian squad that is subpar against left-handed pitching. For his pitching arsenal, Keuchel favors primarily a cutter, sinker, and change-up.

These three pitches make up 85 percent of his repertoire. The Guardians are 1-for-14 at home when facing one of these three pitches from a left-handed pitcher.

Shane Bieber

Shane Bieber looks to maintain his strong form. He's allowed a combined total of four hits in two starts totaling 10 innings. Active White Sox batters have produced a total of six home runs against Bieber. Five of those have come off the bat of either José Abreu or Yoán Moncada.

Neither batter, though, will pose a threat today. Moncada, for starters, is injured. As for Abreu, he is ice cold so far. He is batting .212 and slugging .364 at the moment.

The White Sox hitters who, on paper, threaten Bieber are thus not threatening at all. Expect, therefore, another poor effort from White Sox hitters when facing right-handed pitchers. They rank 23rd in slugging .321 against them.

New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 - 06:40 PM EDT at Comerica Park

Gerrit Cole's Outlook

Yankee starter Gerrit Cole enters today's MLB matchup with an ugly ERA. But his ERA is a product of unique circumstances that won't repeat themselves today.

In his first game, against Boston, he was visibly irritated by the fact that the game was delayed by Opening Day ceremonies. Accordingly, he started slowly in that game, but then he settled in. Against Toronto, he did a fantastic job except against Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is one of baseball's top hitters. Detroit certainly possesses nothing like him in its lineup.

Not to mention, the team's top hitter Javier Baez is out indefinitely with a thumb injury. Cole is in a great spot tonight because he's pitching in Detroit's Comerica Park tonight. Career-wise, he enjoys a 2.81 ERA in four starts in Detroit. Expect, for example, Miguel Cabrera to struggle for the Tigers. He is 1-for-13 with six strikeouts in his career against Cole.

Tyler Alexander is taking advantage of a tenuous situation in Detroit's starting rotation to make his case for the starting gig. He was locked in until a Red Sox lineup relatively good against lefties finally chased him in the sixth inning. As his career game log shows, he is certainly capable of lasting more than 5.1 innings.

The Verdict

Last year, the Yankees slugged an atrocious .269 in Comerica Park. These ballpark struggles suggest a negative outlook for the Yankee lineup that is actually strengthened by two more considerations.

One, the Yanks have scored more than three times once in the past four games despite getting to face Oriole pitching. Two, they have been subpar statistically against left-handed pitching. They are cold and they match up poorly against Detroit's starter.

Except for Keuchel and Bieber in Cleveland and Cole and Alexander to be locked in pitching duels. For the above reasons, invest in the ‘under’ in both games for your best bets.
