MLB Parlay for April 12: A Bet That Pays (+257) (Archive)

Originally published on April 12, 2022

Today’s baseball card looks large and attractive. Let’s take advantage of a parlay. Top sportsbooks have released their MLB odds for today’s baseball action.

Two games, in particular, interest me as worth investing in Colorado vs. Texas and San Diego vs. San Francisco.

For reasons that I will explain, you should play the total in the first game and the money-line in the second.

Feel free to parlay both bets at online sports betting site in order to maximize your profit.

Colorado Rockies vs. Texas Rangers

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 – 08:05 PM EDT at Globe Life Field

Chad Kuhl

Former Pirates starter Chad Kuhl will make his first regular-season start in a new uniform, which is often a nerve-wracking experience for a pitcher looking to impress his new teammates and develop chemistry with a new catcher.

His Spring Training performance does not show a pitcher ready to start in any uniform. To be exact, he allowed three earned runs in 2.2 innings on March 26 against Texas.

Most recently, on March 31, he allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings in San Francisco. Overall, Kuhl's Spring Training ERA was 13.50 in 5.1 innings.

He had never struggled in another Spring Training like he did in this one. Even last year when he was pitching better -- not that a 4.82 ERA is much to brag about -- Kuhl was always very beatable.

Kuhl relies heavily on a single pitch -- the slider -- which last year he threw nearly half the time while, like heat maps show, often leaving it over the middle parts of the strike zone where it is easier for opposing batters to make strong contact against.

Ranger Batters

Offensively, Texas has enjoyed a strong start to its season. It currently ranks second with 6.75 runs per game.

The Rangers boast the left-handed bats to inflict serious damage today with right-handed Kuhl on the mound...

Most notably, Corey Seager is a lefty. The former Dodger is hitting .389 overall.

Keeping Pace

Offensively, Colorado can keep pace with Texas. The Rangers are trotting out lefty Martin Perez who is looking to improve upon the 6.22 ERA that he mustered in his last season as a Ranger.

Colorado is dominating left-handed starters as well as left-handed pitching in general. Pertinent to this game, they are batting .320 and slugging .547 against southpaw starters.

Newcomer Kris Bryant hasn't been contributing to these figures, but that should change.

San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 - 09:45 PM EDT at Oracle Park

Yu Darvish

Padres' starter Yu Darvish may look tempting to back after he went through six innings in his opening start against Arizona without allowing a hit.

In that game, however, he yielded a 4.11 FIP (like ERA, but factors out fielding). Moreover, he produced very minimal soft contact.

That game, therefore, hid his vulnerabilities, which I think Giant batters can exploit. They have a superb history against him.

Five different Giant batters slug at least .530 in at least seven at-bats with Darvish on the mound.

The overall level of power is impressive: considering only those with a qualifying seven at-bats or more against Darvish, San Francisco hitters have collected nine home runs.

Look out for Brandon Crawford who is one Giant with good numbers against Darvish. He's finally finding his footing in the season: in his last two games, he's 3-for-8.

A New Man

Alex Cobb is pitching now for the Giants and he could not be more confident in his starting role.

Throughout his career, he hasn't really been known for velocity. Averaging maybe 92-93 mph, velocity wasn't particularly a weapon for him.

However, he improved his velocity to a significant degree. During Spring Training, he even touched 97 with his fastball.

This newfound velocity makes him a different pitcher altogether. His improved velocity helped him accomplish a 1.23 ERA during Spring Training. It was his best ever Spring Training.

MLB Pick: Giants (-106) with BetOnline

Parlay Verdict

Expect the Rangers and Rockies to combine for a lot of runs as both lineups are primed to knock out the opposing starting pitcher while shaky bullpens will contribute to the score total.

Meanwhile, Yu Darvish should be scared of San Francisco's power, which will help the Giants secure a solid lead for starter Alex Cobb.

For the above reasons, parlay the Rockies/Rangers over with the Giants ML for your MLB picks.
