Mets vs. Phillies MLB Predictions for April 12 (Archive)

Zack Wheeler will make his 2022 debut against the Mets at Citizens Bank Park. Will his minor setback become a major problem for the Phillies against the Mets? Let’s see what the MLB odds for this matchup tell us!

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 – 06:45 PM EDT at Citizens Bank Park

The New York Mets collapsed for the second straight night last night. Yes, you read that right. After leading 4-0 going into the 8th inning, the Mets relievers allowed five runs across the plate and the Mets eventually lost the game, 5-4. That loss helped the Phillies go to 3-1 on the season while the Mets are now 3-2 on the season.

Tylor Megill will take the mound for the Mets tonight. He had a fantastic start to the season in his Opening Day debut. Megill had six strikeouts and allowed no runs in five innings against Washington.

He also induced seven ground balls to just five fly balls and gave up three hits in total. Megill is a candidate to break out this season after earning 26.1% strikeouts last season.

Megill touched 99mph countless times and has overpowering stuff. It was so overpowering that Megill struck out Juan Soto swinging.

The Phillies lineup hasn’t been all that impressive or consistent. But the lineup is going to be wicked good against righties this season.

Last year, the Phillies, as a projected lineup, hit .253 ISO and wOBA of .366. Strikeouts could get high for lefties like Kyle Schwarber but overall, the Phillies should be electric once they get in a groove.

On the other hand, Zack Wheeler will get the start against his old team. This will be Wheeler’s first start of the season after a minor setback pushed his start back to today.

Wheeler had a 2.78 ERA last season and was one of the finalists for the NL Cy Young award last season.

Wheeler had an xFIP of 2.96 with 29.1% strikeouts and just 5% walks along with 51.3% ground balls. He was filthy last season and nothing will likely change.

The Mets are much better against lefties as a lineup and only have Pete Alonso and Eduardo Escobar who have hit above a .200 ISO against righties dating back to last season.

When going up against Wheeler, it’s extremely hard to score runs and put the ball in play. The good news for the Mets is that Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha are all capable of working walks and staying patient.

That’s going to be key against Wheeler. The Mets will want to knock him out early with a high pitch count or just simply fatigue him.

Prediction

The Phillies’ offense hasn’t been all that to start the season. Eventually, it’ll become something greater, but for now, Tylor Megill’s confidence will take over.

Plus, we can also expect Zack Wheeler to put together five strong innings. For my MLB picks, therefore, I’ll ride the under 4.5 in the first five innings at +100. That’s some good value for two emerging starters.
