Mariners vs. White Sox MLB Best Bets for April 13 (Archive)

Originally published on April 13, 2022

Tonight is the middle game of this matchup between the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox. Chicago won their home opener 3-2 to send their South Side fans home happy. Can they do it again?

The Chicago White Sox are considered the best up and coming team in the American League and after winning the AL Central and reaching the playoffs, this season is not about just taking the division again, it is about moving up the ladder and playing for the league championship.

Coming off a shocking 90-win season, Seattle is ready to end a playoff drought that dates back to 2001. The Mariners’ front office and players are convinced the pitching is in place and just need the offense to be above average to play meaningful baseball in October.

The MLB odds at some of the best sportsbooks had Seattle as a -114 money line with a total of ‘under’ 9 (-115). Below, we’ll break down this match and share our best bets!

Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox

Starting Pitching Matchup Favors Seattle

Robbie Ray (1-0, 1.29 ERA) always had the talent, it’s just his mechanics would leave him literally out of nowhere and he would permit five runs after three or four clean scoreless innings.

Last year in Toronto, a coach had a make a modest alteration in his delivery and everything fell into place for the 30-year-old left-hander, who won the Cy Young in 2021. He’s now the ace of Seattle staff and is very comfortable in the role.

Dallas Keuchel is making his 2022 debut and the soft-tossing port-sider has turned into a fifth starter at 34. Never overpowering, Keuchel had a variety of breaking pitches that batters swung at that were below the strike zone in his heyday.

Now, the downward break is reduced, the command is not the same and the velocity difference between the fastball and off-speed pitches does not fool hitters. That’s why the White Sox are underdogs.

White Sox vs. Seattle Strategy

Last season, Chicago was 7th in baseball in runs scored at 4.9 per contest. With several young players far from reaching their full potential, manager Tony La Russa believes this is a Top 5 offense with players like Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson, Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, Andrew Vaughn, and Yasmani Grandal. With this writer having seen them in spring training, this group will rake.

Seattle was one of the most clutch-hitting teams in baseball last year, which is why they scored well above - expected runs - and it was part of the reason they went from 73 to 90 wins.

The Mariners' front office was smart enough to understand that sort of production won’t happen every year and traded for Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez of Cincinnati, looking to add more punch. No big rise in scoring yet from the M’s, but they feel it will come.

Moneyline Play

Ray faced the Pale Hose twice last year and limited them to two runs over 13 1/3 innings, striking out a massive 27 batters and walking just one.

Keuchel has to keep the ball down and on the corners and it seems unlikely he will do that for four or five innings. One would think La Russa would be happy giving up two or three runs with Keuchel pitching and hope his hitters force Ray to throw strikes and he walks a few and they can manufacture runs.

We cannot trust the Sox lefty and the Mariners are 18-11 (+9.2 Units) on the road when the moneyline is +125 to -125 since last season.

Total Play

For our second MLB pick, our initial inclination was to support a higher score. When doing further research, we discovered Ray is 16-4 'under' when the total is 8.5 to 10 and the deeper dive has the lefty 8-0 'under' on the road for the same exact parameters on totals. Final score Seattle 5-3.
