Ligue 1 Matchday 35 Preview and Best Bets (Archive)

Originally published on April 29, 2022

Ligue 1 action returns to the forefront of the soccer betting menu this weekend with a slew of fixtures. The title is decided already as Paris Saint-Germain won a record-tying tenth Ligue 1 title and eighth in the last 10 seasons with a draw against Lens last weekend. However, there’s still a lot to decide across the league, from European spots up for grabs to the relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

In this column, we look at the best matchups on offer this weekend, preview the soccer Ligue 1 odds and serve up the best bets to spot. So, let’s get started.

FC Lens vs. FC Nantes

Saturday, April 30, 2022 – 11:00 AM EDT at Stade Bollaert-Delelis

FC Lens put a damper on PSG’s title celebrations by tying 1-1 with their hosts at the Parc des Princes last weekend. The equalizer came with just two minutes left in regulation time; thus, salvaging the point for Le Racing.

FC Lens are seventh in the table with a 15-9-10 record and 54 points. They are two points adrift of sixth-placed Strasbourg and three points clear of fifth-placed Nice, who sit in the first of several coveted European spots.

Buoyed by their confidence-boosting 1-1 draw with PSG, Lens will be keen to extend their positive form at the expense of FC Nantes, who are tenth in the table with a 14-8-12 record and 50 points. They need all three points here, though. There are only four games left on the season and missteps will be costly. Lens are undefeated in four straight games (W3, D1, L0), and that will only add to their confidence ahead of this game.

Nantes won the last league meeting between this pair, beating Lens 3-2 at Stade de la Beaujoir - Louis Fonteneau in December. It marked Nantes’ third straight unbeaten game against Lens (W1, D2, L0). This time around, with home advantage and the motivation factor tipping the balance towards Lens, the hosts have a good chance to win straight up.

Stade Brestois 29 vs. Clermont Foot 63

Sunday, May 1, 2022 - 9:00 AM EDT at Stade Francis-Le Blé

Brestois and Clermont collide on Sunday with both sides motivated by different goals. Brest is ranked 11th in the league behind a 12-9-13 record and 45 points. The hosts are merely 12 points adrift of fifth-placed Nice and European qualification, but with four games left on the season they must win out to have a chance of qualifying.

By contrast, Clermont are motivated to stay abreast of the relegation zone. As it is, Clermont hovers just above the cut-off line, ranked 17th behind an 8-9-17 record and 33 points.

Brestois are riding a two-game winning streak into this weekend’s contest, improving to a 3-1-1 record in their last five fixtures. Clermont’s form is up and down by comparison. The visitors are 1-2-2 in their last five fixtures, which includes a 2-2 draw against Angers at home on matchday 34.

By all accounts, Les Pirates are enjoying solid form right now. Although climbing into the top five spots is a big ask, they’re in better shape to take the win here for your soccer picks. That fact is underscored by their solid head-to-head record which includes a run of six undefeated (W2, D4, L0).

AS Monaco FC vs. Angers SCO

Sunday, May 1, 2022 - 09:00 AM EDT at Stade Louis II

Monaco will look to close out its season with a top finish and European qualification under their belts. As things currently stand, Monaco is ranked fourth in the table with a 17-8-9 record and 59 points. They are tied on 59 points with third-placed Rennes and they’re also two points ahead of fifth-placed Nice.

What makes Monaco a good bet to finish inside the top 5, when all is said and done, is their good form. AS Monaco are riding a formidable six-game winning streak that goes back to a 3-0 win over PSG on March 20 at home

Angers SCO face a different predicament. They’re fighting for Ligue 1 survival. Les Noirs et Blancs are 14th in the table with an 8-11-15 mark and 35 points. However, only four points separate Angers from 18th ranked St. Etienne and the relegation zone.

Also, they salvaged a point last weekend after playing out to a 2-2 draw against Clermont at Stade Gabriel Montpied on matchday 34. Le Noirs et Blancs face an uphill battle at Stade Louis II against the in-form hosts.

The last meeting between these two outfits resulted in a 3-1 win for Monaco on the road. Judging by how well they’re playing right now, this could be an ever more lopsided win.
