Fox Sports 1 will feature an exciting pitching matchup between the Cardinals and the Giants.

The Cardinals will send out lefty Steven Matz while the Giants send out ground-ball pitcher Logan Webb. Which team will get the win tonight? Let’s see what the MLB odds for this matchup tell us!

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants

Saturday, May 7, 2022 – 07:15 PM EDT Oracle Park

Are These Operating Well?

We might see this matchup in the postseason. Yes, I know we’re only in May but both of these teams between the Cardinals and Giants are always consistently good.

Most teams should be jealous of how these two teams operate. Anyway, the Cardinals will send out left-hander Steven Matz, who is 3-1 with a 4.56 ERA.

Matz has been much better than his ERA, putting together a solid season analytically with a 3.03 xFIP, 26% of strikeouts, and 4.8% walks.

He’s just been a bit unlucky, allowing a .400 BABIP. Against the Giants, he won’t have to worry very much.

Who Will Be Giants' Stater Pitcher?

The Giants have a .080 ISO and wOBA of .245 against lefties this season using the projected lineup. The projected lineup for the Giants is also hitting 46% of ground balls and 18% of line drives.

On the other hand, the Giants will pitch Logan Webb, who has a 3.26 ERA with a 3-1 record himself.

Webb’s strikeouts have been down at 15.9% but overall, he’s limited walks, is getting a ton of ground balls, and has an xFIP of 3.53.

Lefties, however, have a .386 wOBA and ISO of .220. It’s a shame that the Cardinals have just two lefties in the lineup though.

The Cardinals are hitting a .104 ISO and a wOBA of .278 with 17.7% of the line drives. Neither offense is having much success this season against their respective opposition this season.

Webb vs. Righties

Webb has destroyed righties this season, giving up a wOBA of .220 and ISO of .033. The Cardinals probably don’t have much hope.

But neither do the Cardinals as Matz is giving up a .050 ISO to lefties and a .103 ISO to righties. He’s just been a bit unlucky and still has a 3-1 record to begin the year. It will likely only go up from here for Matz.

Prediction

Therefore, I’m looking at the under for this game. It’s sitting at seven but both pitching staffs have been very good this year.

The true portion of the Cardinals bullpen has been dominant and we know the Giants always have great arms coming out of the pen to hold games together.

The Cardinals love hitting against lefties but any time they have to face a righty, you can forget it.

Meanwhile, the Giants have been really bad against lefties to start the year.

I’m not going to trust that lineup until I see some production. So for our MLB picks, let’s grab the under in this one.

Both of these pitchers have kept their teams in every game this season and that won’t change tonight.
