BYU vs. Baylor College Football Week 7 Preview and Best Bet (Archive)

Originally published on October 16, 2021

Welcome to Week 7 of the college football season. Alabama, Penn State, and BYU headlined top-10 losses just last week. We could continue to see the elite fall in this wild season. BYU is trying to rebound against a quality Baylor team. They were almost one-touchdown favorites against Boise State, making their nine-point loss shocking. Their dominant run game simply wasn’t enough to move to 6-0.

Baylor is having a nice season as well, dropping just one game to Oklahoma State thus far. They blew out West Virginia last week. The Big 12 continues to be a mystery on a weekly basis. Both teams have an interesting betting profile for us to consider as we preview how they stack up. We have you covered from every angle of this matchup. Let’s dig in.

BYU vs. Baylor Game Preview

Here’s a look at the preview between BYU and Baylor for Week 7.

Baylor Offense vs. BYU Defense

Who knew that replacing Charlie Brewer with Gerry Bohanon couldn’t have gone any smoother. The dual-threat passer has been a godsend for this unit, completing 66% of his passes for 9.2 yards per attempt. He’s amassed 17 total touchdowns, 11 coming through the air, and zero interceptions.

The Bears’ offense is very much a run-first attack with Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner dominating foes on the ground. But Bohanon keeps defenses honest and is unable to stack the box. Collectively, this offense is creating 7.4 yards per play and ranks as one of the most explosive and consistent in the nation.

Receivers R.J. Sneed and Tyquan Thornton are both averaging over 17 yards per reception. The big play factor with this unit is insane. BYU will need to be sharp and disciplined to weather the storm. Their raw defensive numbers aren’t ideal but they’ve played quality competition. Their defense will bend a bit but rarely breaks. They can hemorrhage yards as long as they win in the red zone.

BYU Offense vs. Baylor Defense

BYU relies heavily on rusher Tyler Allgeier. Stopping him means the offense is largely benign. The question is whether Jaren Hall can recover from a poor showing against Boise State to be more efficient and explosive. It’s hard to imagine considering how well Baylor’s passing defense has fared. They rank 15th in passing yards allowed and 17th in total yards per play this season.

That means the Cougars must hope the threat of Allgeier, or success of his, opens up easy chunk gains through the air. I have a hard time seeing BYU sustaining its success after losing to Boise State. The Broncos aren’t a good team on film, and BYU should have won. But they shrunk in a big game and I think they could do it again this week.

BYU has hit the under in eight of their last nine games. They’ve won 16 of their last 18, and have covered four of their last five road games. Baylor has covered and gone over in four of their last five. They’ve won seven of their last 10 when playing as the favorite.

CFB Betting Picks: BYU vs. Baylor

This line has moved a lot but I can see why. Baylor has a far superior offense and their defense has the chance to make a statement against BYU. BYU will score more than what Baylor may want and push the over, but the Bears should win by at least one touchdown.
