Braves vs. Dodgers MLB Best Bets for Tuesday (Archive)

Originally published on April 19, 2022

The Braves and Dodgers continue their matchup of the last two World Series champions with game two in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers won the opening round of the three-game set, 7-4 on Monday night, as former Brave Freddie Freeman homered on the second pitch he saw from his old teammates. Let’s see what the MLB odds for this matchup tell us!

Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

Bouncing Back

In addition to Freeman, the Braves were haunted by another former Atlanta player Craig Kimbrel, who spent his first five MLB seasons with the team, nailed down the Dodgers win with a save.

The loss dropped Atlanta to 5-7 on the season, losers of four of the last six, and dropped them to third in the NL East as the Marlins leapfrogged them.

Atlanta is now a half-game out of last place in the division. The Braves struggled early in Monday’s showdown with Los Angeles, falling behind 6-0.

Atlanta rallied, however homering twice off of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw—one by Guillermo Heredia and one by Ozzie Albies.

A three-run sixth inning helped make things tight, even if Atlanta couldn’t finish off the comeback. “It was great,” manager Brian Snitker said. “That’s what these guys are all about.”

The Braves again struggled in key situations. Despite making good contact and pitching well, the results haven’t been there for Atlanta early this season.

On Monday, they went just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left a total of four men on base in the sixth through eighth innings, when they trailed by just two.

Matt Olson continued his hot hitting with another three-hit game, his fourth of the season and seventh multi-hit outing in his two weeks as a Brave.

The Braves will start Max Fried on Tuesday. Fried has lost both of his first two starts of the season, giving up 15 hits and seven earned runs in 11 innings against the Reds and Nationals.

The Braves offense hasn’t cooperated with Fried, managing just four runs of support in the two games.

Rolling Along

Monday’s win was the seventh straight for the Dodgers and put them alone in first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of the idle Giants. Los Angeles is a perfect 5-0 at home.

Freeman’s home run was his first as a Dodger and continued his hot hitting. He’s now batting .325 on the young season with seven RBI.

Another former NL MVP has also heated up to support him as Cody Bellinger appears to be emerging from his one-year-plus slump.

After opening the season 0-for-8, Bellinger has gone 10 for his last 28 and recorded his fourth multi-hit game in the last six on Monday.

Bellinger homered, doubled, and drove in two against the Braves. Los Angeles will start Walker Buehler on Tuesday.

He’s 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts this season, beating the Rockies and getting a no-decision in a win over the Reds.

He has yet to get out of the sixth inning this year but might need to stretch out a bit as the Dodgers’ bullpen will be short-handed.

Right-handed reliever Blake Treinen has a sore arm and, after playing catch before Monday’s game, was ruled out for the series.

Buehler is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts and a 2.79 ERA in three starts against Atlanta, so he could step up with a gem.

The Picks

Fried is still looking to regain the form he showed in the last three years, while Buehler has been solid and could step up against the Braves.

Atlanta’s offense is still gelling, while the Dodgers appear to be hitting their stride at the plate. For your MLB picks, look for L.A. to take game two in a pitchers’ duel.
