While four NHL playoff series got underway Monday, the other four start Tuesday. We like three of them on an NHL parlay pick with odds from BetOnline, one of BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks

Washington Capitals vs. Florida Panthers

Tuesday, May 03, 2022 – 07:30 PM EDT at BB&T Center

Panthers

Florida finished as the Presidents’ Trophy winner for the first time in franchise history as the Cats look for their first Stanley Cup title. Can’t say I recommend that wager, though. Why? Sure, Florida led the NHL in scoring at an obscene 4.11 goals per game, but only eight times has a Presidents’ Trophy winner won the Stanley Cup and just twice since the 2004-05 lockout.

The last to do so was the 2013 Blackhawks. Weird stat because home-ice advantage is so important in hockey with the last line change.

Alex Ovechkin

The big news entering this game is the status of Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin. He missed the final three games due to injury but is fully expected to play. He had the ninth 50-goal season of his Hall of Fame career, tied with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most ever.

Ovi had four goals and two assists this year vs. Florida, which won two of three matchups. All of those were played in November.  Caps coach Peter Laviolette hasn’t said which goaltender will start between Vitek Vanecek (20-12-6, 2.67 GAA, .908 SV) or Ilya Samsonov (23-12-5, 3.02 GAA, .896 SV). I would guess Vanecek although both were pretty inconsistent down the stretch.

Simply have to take Florida at home, where it was a stunning 34-7-0. Sergei Bobrovsky was 26-3-0 at home with a 2.57 GAA.

Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche

Tuesday, May 03, 2022 - 09:30 PM EDT at Ball Arena

Avalanche

Colorado opens the playoffs as the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, just like the Avs were last year only to lose in the second round to Vegas. The Knights didn’t make it this year.

Now, this price is crazy high for a playoff game, but it’s because the Predators will be without No. 1 goaltender Juuse Saros due to a lower-body injury – he’ll also miss Game 2 at a minimum. He was 38-25-3 with a 2.64 GAA and .918 SV this season while backup David Rittich was 6-3-4 with a 3.57 GAA and .886 SV. So, yeah, quite the downgrade.

Predators

While I think Nashville could perhaps steal a game at home this series even if Saros doesn’t play, I don’t see the Preds winning in Denver, where the Avalanche were 32-5-4. The team struggled a bit down the stretch, but throw that out as it really had nothing to play for with the top seed in the West wrapped up for weeks.

There is one key player in question for Colorado and that’s Nazem Kadri, who had a great season with 28 goals and 59 assists. He was unable to practice Sunday and Monday with a non-COVID illness. The Avs have plenty of firepower even if he sits.

Nashville led the NHL in penalty minutes (1,035) and spent more time shorthanded (455:43) than any team but the Carolina Hurricanes (479:10). You can’t go short-handed vs. Colorado.

Dallas Stars vs. Calgary Flames

Tuesday, May 03, 2022 - 10:00 PM EDT at Scotiabank Saddledome

Flames

For what it’s worth, Calgary is my NHL pick to come out of the Western Conference. The Flames ended the regular-season with back-to-back losses but I don’t fret about that too much as both were on the road and Calgary was locked into its playoff seeding as the Pacific Division champion.

Jacob Markstrom probably finishes second for the Vezina Trophy, going 37-15-9 with a 2.22 GAA, .922 SV, and a league-best nine shutouts. Calgary allowed 2.51 goals per game this season, best in the Western Conference.

The Flames have two 100-point scorers in Johnny Gaudreau (115 points, second in franchise history) and Matthew Tkachuk (104). Calgary has reached the second round of the playoffs just once in the past seven seasons when they were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in 2015. They are getting to Round 2 this year, mark my words.

The Pick

Dallas hasn’t played a road game since an April 21 loss in Calgary – the Stars are the only team in the NHL playoffs with a losing away record at 19-20-2. That’s why I have to back the Flames in Game 1 even at a fairly expensive price.
