2022 Miami Open Picks for March 28 (Archive)

Originally published on March 28, 2022

We have a lot of exciting tennis action on tap for today. The women will complete their round of 16, so every woman competitor still remaining will be in action today.

It will be quite the manic Monday, but we have found the winning tennis picks for today so let’s get into it!

Petra Kvitova vs. Veronika Kudermetova

Monday, March 28, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Grandstand Court

Petra Kvitova

Petra Kvitova is a former Grand Slam champion currently ranked number 32 in the world. Petra Kvitova is a tall left-hander with a big serve and a big forehand. Kvitova definitely plays the power game and has no problem blasting her opponents off the court.

The Czech prefers short rallies, which make the slow court in Miami one of her least favorite surfaces. Kvitova also suffers from asthma and can struggle in the heat. This is definitely a tough test for Kvitova going against the young Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who is playing some of her best tennis as of late.

Veronika Kudermetova

Veronika Kudermetova is coming off a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Shelby Rogers. Rogers grew up near Miami and considers this one of her hometown tournaments. It was an especially impressive win for Kudermetova against Rogers, who was in good form.

Kudermetova did not end the 2021 season in good form. She has played much better in 2022, however. She has already made two finals, one in Melbourne and one in Dubai. She followed that up with her career-best result in Indian Wells, a quarterfinal appearance.

Veronika Kudermetova also prefers the power game. Kudermetova has a huge serve and excellent pace on her groundstrokes. For a power player, however, The Russian is exceptionally good at using angles to set up herself for winning shots. Kudermetova is an excellent mix of power and strategy when she is playing well.

The Pick

I like the young Russian to continue her streak today against Petra Kvitova. Kudermetova is playing some of the best tennis we have seen from her and, at this rate, she is definitely on her way to the top 20.

This will be Kudermetova’s last chance to accrue points on hard courts before the tennis season switches to clay, and I expect her to make the most of that opportunity. Our first bet for today's WTA Miami Open is Veronika Kudermetova ML.

Paula Badosa vs. Linda Fruhvirtova

Monday, March 28, 2022 - 09:00 PM EDT at Stadium Court

Paula Badosa

Paula Badosa took the WTA world by storm in 2021 and is now ranked number six in the world. Badosa had her first major win at Indian Wells last fall. She followed it up with an impressive performance this year, reaching the semifinals before falling to Maria Sakkari.

Badosa has not dropped a set in her two matches so far here in Miami. She defeated Marie Bouzkova 7-5, 7-5 in the first round and then had a more thorough victory against Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-2. Badosa will face a new test today, however, in Linda Fruhvirtova.

Linda Fruhvirtova

Linda Fruhvirtova appears to be the next rising star in the WTA. Fruhvirtova is only 16 years old and is already playing at a high level. Fruhvirtova beat the ultra-consistent Elise Mertens in the first round 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. That was a nice win for the sixteen-year-old, but Mertens has not been playing exceptionally well this year.

In her next match, however, she showed utter domination against one of the best players in the world, Victoria Azarenka. Linda Fruhvirtova was beating Azarenka so badly that Vika just walked off the court with a score of 6-2, 3-0. Fruhvirtova was throttling Azarenka in such a dominant fashion that the usually pleasant Azarenka had had enough and simply walked off.

It was the best win of Linda Fruhvirtova’s career and it was too bad it was marred and overshadowed by Azarenka's poor sportsmanship.

Betting Analysis

With the retirement of Ash Barty, the WTA tour is wide open and Paula Badosa will be looking to take advantage. The Spanish has an excellent all-court game and can win either being the aggressor or the defender. Badosa will adjust her strategy to whatever will beat her opponent the best. Paula Badosa is one of the most versatile tacticians in the women's game today.

Linda Fruhvirtova is an up-and-coming young player who has excellent groundstrokes and power. The Czech youngster is already hitting the ball past older and more experienced players.

Fruhvirtova is one of the hottest prospects on the WTA tour and I would not be surprised to see her in the top 100 by the end of the year, and in the top 30 within two years.

The Pick

I like the fast-rising young Czech player Linda Fruhvirtova to keep this match close today. As well as Fruhvirtova has been playing, even a versatile player such as Badosa will have problems dealing with her aggressive game.

This will also be Badosa’s first look at Fruhvirtova, so it might take her a little while to adjust to the way that the ball comes off of Fruhvirtova's racket. Our second bet for today's WTA in the Miami Open is Linda Fruhvirtova +5.5 games.

WTA Pick: Linda Fruhvirtova +5.5 Games (+100) at GTbets (visit our GTbets Review)
