2022 Charleston Open Picks for April 4 (Archive)

Originally published on April 4, 2022

The Charleston Open is played on the green clay courts at LTP Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. It is a WTA 500 event, meaning 500 ranking points will be awarded to the winner.

There is $565,000 of prize money available to the 56 women who are entered in the singles tournament. Veronika Kudermetova is the defending champion.

The green clay is a fun way for players to transition to the European clay coming up for the next two months on the tennis schedule. Let’s take a look at today’s matches to find more winning WTA picks.

Shelby Rogers vs. Kaia Kanepi

Monday, April 04, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Credit One Stadium

Shelby Rogers is 6-6 on the year. In her most recent tournament, the Miami Open, Rogers defeated Amanda Anisimova in the first round and defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.

Shelby Rogers fell to Veronika Kudermetova in the third round. Kudermetova is the defending champion here at Charleston.

Shelby Rogers was born in Charleston and grew up here in South Carolina. This will be her 10th appearance in her hometown tournament.

Her best result at the Charleston Open is to make the quarterfinal in 2017. She looked to really be ready to break out at the end of the 2021 season.

She made the fourth round of the US Open and the quarterfinal in Indian Wells last October. Unfortunately for Rogers, the success has not carried over to this season.

Kaia Kanepi is a 36-year-old Estonian player ranked number 57 in the world. She is 9-4 on the year.

So far this year she has accumulated notable wins over top players such as Aryna Sabalenka, Belinda Bencic, and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Kanepi is a power player. Kanepi definitely has the power to hit through opponents, even on clay, but court coverage is an issue for her on slower surfaces.

Even in the twilight of her career, Kanepi is a tough challenge for her opponents. This will be a fun matchup between two of the hardest hitters on tour.

Both women will prefer quick points and we should see plenty of blistering winners being blasted by each player.

Even though Kanepi has had a better form this season, I like Rogers to get it done on her home court today.

Rogers has been playing better with each tournament this season and I think she has a distinct advantage here with familiarity with the weather and the support of the home crowd.

My first best bet for today's WTA Charleston Open is Shelby Rogers ML.

Xinyu Wang vs. Irina-Camelia Begu

Monday, April 04, 2022 - 08:15 PM EDT at Credit One Stadium

Irina Begu is a 31-year old Romanian player ranked 66th in the world. Begu is 8-7 on the year. She has scored high-profile wins over Jessica Pegula, Petra Kvitova, and most recently she eliminated Aryna Sabalenka from the Miami Open.

Begu then lost in a tight three-set match to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Begu has made the quarterfinals here in Charleston three times.

After a disappointing clay swing last year, Begu would like to use this tournament to get her results back on track. Begu has a balanced game, although neither her power nor defense are exceptional at the WTA level.

Xinyu Wang is off to a rough start this year. She is 6-8 on the year. She was eliminated in her most recent outing in the first round against Aliaksandra Sasnovich after qualifying in Miami.

The 20-year-old Chinese player is trying to continue her ascension on the WTA Tour, but she's definitely hit a roadblock lately.

She does quite well on the lower levels of the tour but struggles every time she steps up to the WTA level.

In the tape study, it is evident she should have the game to hang with the women in the top 50, but it has not translated on the court yet.

Wang hopes to improve her strategy and mental approach to the game this year. This will allow her to be competitive with the world's top players.

Begu is rightfully the favorite by WTA odds, but I think this will be a fairly close match with Wang being able to keep pace with Begu for a while.

While I'm not confident in the young Chinese prospect's ability to win, I do think she will put forth a good showing here today.

Begu has not been playing that well as of late and Wang should be able to settle in and take advantage. My second bet for WTA Charleston is Over 21 games.
