2022 BNP Paribas Open Picks for March 9 (Archive)

Originally published on March 9, 2022

The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells kicks off today. Indian Wells is a premier event worth 1000 points that fans and players look forward to each season. Younger players who have success here in Indian Wells often use it as a launching pad for bigger success. Let’s take a look at today’s odds to find some winning tennis picks.

Harmony Tan vs. Rebecca Peterson

Wednesday, March 09, 2022 – 07:15 PM EST at Indian Wells Tennis Garden

This will be Harmony Tan's first main draw appearance in a premier 1000 tournament. Tan has made the second round in the last three tournaments she's played.

Harmony Tan played well in qualifying, defeating Priscilla Hon and Aleksandra Krunic. Tan was able to defeat Hon in a routine straight-set victory 6-3, 6-4. She was pushed to 3 sets against the Serbian Krunic, but prevailed fairly easily after being bageled in the first set. The final score was a wild 0-6,6-2,6-2. That's a classic WTA scoreline.

Tan has potential but has so far struggled in the main draw of her events. She is 24 years old. The time is ripe for Tan to finally make her move if she wants to enter the top 50 in the WTA.

Rebecca Peterson is 26 years old and has struggled with injuries. She appears to be fully healthy, but she has yet to find the results she once had. Peterson has only three main draw wins this year. Her last tournament appearance was in St. Petersburg where she lost to Andrea Petkovic in the first round.

Peterson has a big win over Aryna Sabalenka this season, but I don't rate it that highly because Sabalenka was playing terribly and almost anyone could have beat her on that day. Her 2 other wins were over the Australians Astra Sharma and Daria Saville. Peterson has plenty of talent but has yet to put it together and be consistent this season.

At the current WTA odds, I think there is value on Harmony Tan to get the win. Peterson has not been playing her best. Tan has been more consistent, honing her skills in lower-level tournaments.

I think this is a great opportunity for Tan to get her first win in a tournament of this stature. Until we see something better from Peterson, I will continue to bet against her. Our first bet for Indian Wells is Harmony Tan ML.

Dayana Yastremska vs. Caroline Garcia

Wednesday, March 09, 2022 – 09:00 PM EST at Indian Wells Tennis Garden

Dayana Yastremska has been under a lot of pressure lately. The Ukrainian player had to leave her family at home but her family encouraged her to continue her tennis career, despite the turmoil and tragedy going on in her home country. It was tough to predict how Yastremska would react to playing sports while the conflict was going on in her homeland, but Yastremska showed she will focus and use tennis as an escape from all the troubles in the world.

Yastremska played excellent tennis in Lyon before eventually succumbing in the final to Zhang Shuai. Yastremska's brand of powerful tennis was on display and her opponents could not keep up with her pace on the quicker indoor courts of Lyon. The courts in Indian Wells will play slower, but Yastremska still has the power to hit through her opponents.

Caroline Garcia also played the WTA Lyon tournament last week, and also fell to Zhang Shuai. Garcia's first three victories were all three-set affairs, but it is encouraging for Garcia that she was able to come through in close, hard-fought matches.

Garcia has plenty of talent. She can generate power and has an excellent serve (when it is landing). Garcia's problem has been inconsistency, and an inability to develop different styles of her game. This can be attributed to her lack of proper coaching. In a somewhat stubborn decision, Garcia has not moved on from her father as her coach. As a result, Garcia was able to make the WTA tour but has not lived up to her full potential.

I think Yastremska's power will shine through in his match today. Garcia can be prone to inconsistency and Yastremska should be able to take advantage of that. Yastremska has more powerful groundstrokes and will have an advantage in longer rallies.

Obviously, with everything going on in the world, there are a lot of eyes on Yastremska matches and I believe that she will be able to make her family and country proud. My second best bet for today is Dayana Yastremska -2 games.
