2022 BNP Paribas Open Best Bets for March 10 (Archive)

Originally published on March 10, 2022

The second day of first-round play is here at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The WTA 1000 tournament is the highlight of the spring for American tennis.

As the action continues in the desert, let’s find more winning WTA picks.

Katie Boulter vs. Jasmine Paolini

Thursday, March 10, 2022 – 03:15 PM EST at Stadium 4

Katie Boulter

Katie Boulter is a popular British player who has never reached her potential. Boulter is honest and engaging in interviews, leading her to be very popular among British fans. Unfortunately, she has yet to translate her talent into success. Hopefully, she is taking her career seriously as her window for success at the top of the WTA tour is closing.

Boulter has been playing well as of late, winner of 10 of her last 11 matches. We must give the statistic with the caveat that she entered a W60 tournament, filled with lower-level ITF players. Still, she was able to win the tournament. The tournament did not have much prize money, but it did indicate to me that she is taking her career seriously.

Oftentimes, dropping into the lower levels and getting wins is good for a player’s confidence and game. Working on how to figure out how to win when you are not playing your best is as important as testing yourself against the best. Sometimes simply finding solutions to get the victory is what a player needs to do to take the next step.

One concern about Boulter is in her lone loss of the last 11 matches, she withdrew due to injury. However, Boulter looked good in qualifying, defeating Xinyu Wang in three sets, and Sara Errani in straight sets.

Jasmine Paolini

Jasmine Paolini has the mental aspect of tennis down. Paolini is a fighter who never gives up. Paolini has a smaller stature so she will never be the most powerful player. But, she does take advantage of her quickness and tenacity to be the best defensive player she can be.

The Italian has not played her best tennis as of late, however, going 3-5 in her last 8 matches. Paolini also seems to play better in Europe. She's still growing as a player though and maybe becoming adept in North America will be the next step for the development of her career.

The Pick

Due to Katie Boulter’s recent good form, I like her to keep her winning ways going. Boulter has impressed me lately with her work on her game, and I think that working through those matches allowed her to regain some confidence in herself and her game.

Although Paolini is tough to bet against, with her fiery spirit and never-say-die attitude, I think that Boulter’s better form makes her the right play here. Our first bet for Indian Wells is the Katie Boulter ML.

Maria Camila Osorio Serrano vs. Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Thursday, March 10, 2022 - 07:10 PM EST at Stadium 9

Camila Osorio

Camila Osorio is coming off an excellent week by making the finals at WTA Monterrey. It was a hard-fought, closely contested match. Osorio finally succumbed to the defending champion Leylah Fernandez, in a third-set tiebreak.

The Colombian showed many new aspects to her game in this tournament, featuring newfound power and aggression. Osorio was known as a defensive player most of last season. She displayed that she has been working on her offense, the next step toward developing her game. Osorio's success in Monterrey is a good precursor to the tournament this week.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich

Aliaksandra Sasnovich has had a strong start to the 2022 season. Sasnovich is 11-4 on the year. Sasnovich is a streaky player who is definitely tough to play when she's at her best. The early results in 2022 signal that we should be getting “the good version” of Sasnovich this season.

She's 27 years old and currently ranked 59th in the world. Sasnovich is an all-around player, who can play both offense and defense. Sasnovich struggles against really big hitters or purely defensive players.

The Belarusian does not have the strength and power to keep up with the big hitters, and defensive players can induce her erratic nature to come forth. It will be interesting to see which tact Camila Osorio takes in her match against the Belarussian Sasnovich today.

The Pick

I was really impressed with Camila Osorio's development last week. Initially, I had pegged her as a purely defensive player, but she showed throughout the week that she is working on her ability to strike clean winners. Osorio showed good form and I do not believe that her long week of tennis will have adverse effects upon her, with this tournament starting on a Wednesday and not the usual Monday.

Osorio is only 20 years old and should have plenty of energy in the tank for this matchup today. Because of her previous accomplishments against higher-ranked players, Aliaksandra Sasnovich is favored by WTA odds.

This gives us a great opportunity to back an up-and-coming player, Camila Osorio. Osorio is getting better at an impressive rate, and we will continue to see that improvement today. Our second bet for Indian Wells is Camila Osorio ML.
