Da Un Jung vs. Devin Clark
UFC 283 Light Heavyweight Co-Main Event Bout
Saturday, Feb 4, 2023 – 10:00 PM EST at the APEX
Da Un Jung
- Pro MMA Record: 15-3-1 (11 KOs, 2 submissions, 2 decisions)
- UFC Record: 4-1 (2 KOs, 1 submission, 1 decision)
- Age: 29
- Height: 6'4"
- Reach: 78.5"
- Training Out Of: Korean Top Team
- Origin Fighting Style: MMA
Da Un Jung made Korean mixed martial arts history when becoming the first Korean national to join the UFC light heavyweight division. And at 205lbs, the Korean Top Team representative instantly impacted the division when submitting Khadis Ibragimov via standing guillotine choke during the third round of his promotional debut.
Making Up for Lost Time
Unfortunately, Jung’s UFC career trajectory was stunted following his 2019.
After two consecutive wins in the octagon by way of stoppage, the pandemic halted the schedule of many international fighters, including the Korean. Furthermore, he’s been the victim of six canceled bouts since his debut appearance.
During the 2022 UFC schedule, Jung only competed once and was unfortunately stopped by a vicious right cross from Dustin Jacoby to lose his four-fight consecutive win streak at the company.
That said, Jung holds onto a top 20 ranking (#19) and hopes to make an impact versus a household name in Devin Clark. Aged just 29, we may have yet to witness the fighting prime of his career.
Best Available Odds: Da Un Jung to Win (-240) at Everygame
Devin Clark
- Pro MMA Record: 13-7 (4 KO/TKO, 1 submission, 8 decisions)
- UFC Record: 7-7 (1 KO/TKO, 6 decisions)
- Age: 32
- Height: 6'0"
- Reach: 75.0"
- Training Out Of: Jackson-Wink MMA
- Origin Fighting Style: Wrestling
Gauging the potential ceiling of Devin Clark’s MMA career has been challenging.
In one instance, he’ll walk out to defeat notable contenders such as Alonzo Menifield and Darko Stosic, but when the big fights arrived, he’s always faltered and dropped the ball.
Mid to Low-Card
The brutal honesty is that Clark could remain a mid to low-card fighter forever. Recent losses to Anthony Smith, Ion Cutelaba, and Azamat Murzakanov hold no shame, but they’ve also revealed many weaknesses that don’t present a future division main-stayer.
However, Clark does own the skills to cause upsets.
It’s difficult to envision him ever reaching the top ten or 15 of the light heavyweight division. He lacks killer instinct and the viciousness to accompany the notable skillset he owns, primarily wrestling.
Best Available Odds: Devin Clark (-108) at Bovada
Fight Analysis
Clark Fight Style & How Can Clark Beat Jung?
Wrestling is the path to victory Clark relies on most, and we shouldn’t expect anything different this weekend.
Every win during Clark’s professional MMA career has relied on his offensive wrestling background, heavy hips, and point-fighting style.
Watching him stop William Knight via elbows and hooks was actually a surprise, as Clark is renowned for his lack of offensive grit and ability to stop fighters inside the distance.
He won’t keep up with technical striking Jung, but the question is whether Jung can defend the grappling offense.
Jung Fight Style & How Can Jung Beat Clark?
Jung entered the UFC behind a lot of hype; for the most part, he’s lived up to it.
Can he return clear-minded following the first knockout loss of his career is the only red flag entering this weekend's bout.
However, when we evaluate their overall abilities of Jung, he’s levels ahead of Clark. He’s dynamic; his cardio checks out with fast and heavy hands.
His defensive wrestling has looked great thus far and could undoubtedly be the decider in this bout.
Jung’s large; he’s shown intelligence in the octagon and could stop Clark inside the distance based on his technical ability alone.
Odds & Betting Picks
The available odds at Bookmakers Review have positioned Jung as a significant betting favorite, and we agree.
Skill for skill most attributes favor Jung.
Clark can wrestle but has failed to implement his grappling on too many occasions.
I think we bet the Korean without thinking twice.
