Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Jared Vanderaa

UFC Vegas 63 Heavyweight Bout

Saturday, October 29, 2022 – 04:00 PM EDT at UFC Apex

Waldo Cortes-Acosta

  • Pro MMA Record: (7-0-0) (4 KO, 1 submission, 2 decisions)

Unsurprisingly, another LFA (Legacy Fighting Alliance) alumni has punched his ticket to the big stage through a dominant performance on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. Still, when an undefeated former boxer in Waldo Cortes-Acosta makes his UFC debut this weekend, we should expect fireworks from those fists of fury.

Cortes-Acosta landed his third successive knockout when he stopped Danilo Suzart in the first round at Dana White’s Contender Series 48. Still, the Dominican Republic representative has bigger aspirations than simply obtaining success against lower levels of competition.

“I just want to keep going, and for every opponent they put in front of me, I just want to destroy them,” Cortes-Acosta told the press following his knockout performance at DWCS 48. “And I’m going to keep doing that until I get to Francis Ngannou.”

Those are the words of a confident hot prospect because, let’s be honest, even the heavyweight divisions top 10 ranked fighters aren’t mentioning the name of Ngannou. But can Cortes-Acosta live up to the hype in his UFC debut this weekend? We believe so.

Cortes-Acosta has reached the pinnacle of MMA promotions with less than four years of professional MMA experience, having competed as a boxer before transitioning to full-time mixed martial arts. And since his move, he’s dominated all seven of his cage appearances while competing as a boxer.

Cortes-Acosta vs. Vanderaa: Fight Analysis

Cortes-Acosta is a slick boxer, as expected, with a background in the sport. He has great potential in the heavyweight division; he has unpredictable speed and relentless pressure that he can turn on and off.

Behind notable footwork and knockout power, Cortes-Acosta delivers a traditional jab beautifully, and he shouldn’t have much trouble outperforming the lower-ranked heavyweights currently in this division.

Cortes-Acosta vs. Vanderaa: Betting Pick and Odds

Jared Vanderaa (12-9-0) has been widely unimpressive since making his UFC debut in 2021, and his 1-5 record for the promotion will see him removed from the roster should he lose this weekend.

The intelligent game plan would be to implement a grappling-based approach for his bout against Acosta, but the fight IQ of Vanderaa isn’t trustworthy, and as we’ve seen repeatedly, he loves to stand and bang.

The UFC Vegas 63 betting odds at top-rated sportsbooks favor the newcomer, and rightfully so. Vanderaa has one foot out the door due to his lackluster performances.

A history of exchanging shots inside the pocket isn’t going to fare well versus an experienced boxer with a point to prove.
