Calvin Kattar vs. Arnold Allen

UFC Vegas 63 Featherweight Main Event Bout

Saturday, October 29, 2022 – 06:00 PM EDT at Apex Center

Calvin Kattar

  • Pro MMA Record: 23-6-0 (10 KOS, 3 submissions, 10 decisions)

Calvin Kattar went five rounds with Max Holloway in January 2021 to deliver fight fans an instant classic.

However, with a twelve-month absence, critics wondered how the 34-year-old would return against the division's top-10 elite. Kattar silenced the doubters when he dominated top contender Giga Chikadze.

Unfortunately, his most recent bout against Josh Emmett during the summer of 2022 didn’t provide the same outcome.

Kattar, a Wrestler? Since When?

Kattar is renowned for his fundamental boxing skills. Behind a crisp, technical, and precise boxing output, is a mixed martial artist who began his journey on the wrestling mats.

Does Kattar like to wrestle? No, will we see Kattar wrestle? Probably not. But we should be conscious that he’s a complete professional MMA competitor, who can switch it up when necessary.

Returning to the cage following a defeat and finding success has already been achieved, Kattar. Still, the young and hungry Arnold Allen will pose a severe threat in the American’s attempted comeback.

Arnold Allen

  • Pro MMA Record: 18-1-0 (6 KOs, 4 submissions, 8 decisions)

After obtaining an undefeated amateur kickboxing and boxing record (8-0), British featherweight Arnold Allen took the MMA world by storm.

Allen arrived in the UFC with little hype around his name, but following a round one TKO stoppage win over Dan Hooker in his previous bout, he has the full attention of MMA fans worldwide.

Dominant UFC Record

Outside of one loss to the talented Marcin Wrzosek in 2014, Allen has defeated every opponent that’s been put in front of him.

An 18-1 record is accompanied by a 9-0 UFC consecutive win streak, and for the previous seven years, he’s slowly climbed the 145lb rankings to become a top contender.

Boasting a diverse skill set and a level of aggression we didn’t know existed until he went to war with Dan Hooker, Allen is now a handful of fights away from becoming a title challenger for Alexander Volkanovski’s featherweight strap.

Kattar vs. Allen: Breakdown and Analysis

Kattar Fight Style: How Can Kattar Defeat Allen?

Traditional 1-2 combinations and a variety in his shot selection inside the pocket is how Kattar loves to unleash his striking offense.

Once tipped as the cleanest boxer in the featherweight division, I believe Holloway removed that rumor, but this doesn’t mean we should undermine the elite striking that Kattar has to offer.

Is it wise for Kattar to fall back on his wrestling background against Allen? Probably not, and I wouldn’t suggest entering the pocket for too long either, see Allen vs. Hooker.

If Kattar can strike at range and utilize his footwork, he can find a way to take a unanimous or split decision.

Allen Fight Style: How Can Allen Defeat Kattar?

Allen will want to avoid the kickboxing range with Kattar, which he did expertly against Hooker.

He may want to test his strength against Kattar and utilizes clinch situations or wrestle, but his main focus should be to land those power strikes.

Suffocate Katter’s range because we know he won’t want to come on the inside and risk the flurry of kill shots that Hooker did.

If Allen can force Kattar to get uncomfortable and make it a dog fight with pressure and boxing combinations, he can achieve the same outcome as his previous bout.

Kattar vs. Allen: Prediction and Odds

The available UFC odds at the top-rated sportsbooks favor Kattar ever so slightly, but Allen is a proven dog who’s younger, faster, and stronger.

Allen is exceptionally well-rounded; he can strike and wrestle at a high level. And suppose the aforementioned game plan comes to the surface.

In that case, he can undoubtedly win via KO/TKO or on points by delivering the more powerful strikes, similar to how Emmett overcome the technical aspect of Kattar’s game.
