Askar Askarov vs. Brandon Royval

UFC Vegas 62 Flyweight Main Card Bout

Saturday, October 15, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at UFC Apex

Russian prospect Askar Askarov (14-1-1) surrendered his undefeated streak and a number one contender opportunity to Kai Kara-France during his previous octagon appearance.

This result, however, shouldn’t deter MMA critics from the elite-level skillset that has him positioned as a top-5 ranked flyweight in the world.

Brandon Royval (14-6-0) has been involved in some of the most entertaining flyweight contests to date.

Behind an exciting in-cage style and a kill-or-be-killed attitude, the Colorado-born product from factory Muay Thai can make a huge statement this weekend with a win over Askarov.

Askarov vs. Royval: Fight Breakdown

The expected game plan for Royval would usually point towards a grappling-based approach, but repeatedly, Askarov has proven how elite his defensive and offensive skills are in this area.

Unfortunately for Royval, he’s like going to own a disadvantage in striking area. Should Askarov implement a wrestling offensive of his own, Royvals’ jiu-jitsu offense off his back isn’t as dangerous.

With that said, we should still expect spammed submission attempts from Royval, and if the fight remains on the feet, both fighters won’t hold back in attempting to land a kill shot.

However, Askarov boasts a level of composure and patience that’s seen him reach the judge's scorecards in five consecutive meetings. Combined with Royval’s toughness, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this contest reach the 15-minute time limit.

Askarov vs. Royval: Odds and Prediction

The UFC odds with Bookmaker Review are showing value on the over 2.5 rounds because Royval has supplied and fallen victim to countless fight-ending bouts.

Askarov knows how to pace a fight and won’t fall victim to Royval’s speedy approach.

Raphael Assuncao vs. Victor Henry

UFC Vegas 62 Bantamweight Main Card Bout

Saturday, October 15, 2022 - 04:00 PM EDT at UFC Apex

Brazilian veteran Raphael Assuncao (27-9-0) has competed at the highest level of MMA for over a decade.

With notable wins over former champions T.J. Dillashaw, Cody Garbrandt, and the current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling on his record, he owns all of the champion-worthy qualities besides actually holding the gold.

Victor Henry (22-5-0) is a fresh face to the UFC roster, but his experience in the cage isn’t far behind his weekend opponent.

It’s rare to see the UFC offer contracts to fighters in their mid-30s, but Henry became the exception when making his promotional debut earlier this year due to his formidable skillset.

Assuncao vs. Henry: Fight Breakdown

Defeating Raoni Barcelos in his UFC debut was a fast track up the bantamweight rankings, and rightfully so. Aged 35, Henry doesn’t have time on his hands as Dana White and co. will ideally want to make the most of their new signing.

In terms of skillset, Henry excels on the ground and is a standout wrestler. To accompany his grappling offense is a jiu-jitsu game that’s seen him win eight of his career successes via submission.

For Assuncao he’s a former top-5 competitor who hasn’t been producing the same results he did in the past. Aged 40, there’s no denying that his skillset is slowly diminishing.

He’s extremely well-rounded and can fight anywhere; unfortunately, his durability has taken a hit as he’ll enter Saturday’s contest on a 4-fight losing streak. The Brazilian is regressing, which could be a problem when faced with Henry's speed, scrambling, and BJJ skills.

Assuncao vs. Henry: Odds and Prediction

The UFC odds with top-rated sportsbooks have placed a -400 price tag on Henry, and this should come as no surprise as he overcame a legitimate wrestling champion from Brazil in his UFC debut.

Now he’ll face an opponent in Assuncao, who is significantly slower and less durable than Barcelos was.

Due to the highly-priced moneyline on Henry, I believe we can find betting value in the under 2.5 rounds.

I think Henry can tire Assuncao through his relentless grappling offense to where he can lock up a late submission or ground-and-pound flurry to finish the fight inside the distance.
