Fighter Analysis

After competing on The Ultimate Fighter Season 21, Brazilian mixed martial artist, Vicente Luque, wasted no time becoming one of the most recognizable welterweight competitors on the planet. A 14-3 promotional record obtained in the UFC octagon has been accompanied by thirteen successes that ended via submission of KO/TKO.

Luque is a born finisher, as fans and bettors alike should have zero hesitancy when backing the Brazil native to get the job done inside the distance. And aged just 30 years old, these prime fighting years could deliver a plethora of additional highlight reel stoppages for his resume.

With a lifelong experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and offensive striking skillsets such as karate and muay thai, Luque’s current training ground at the world-renowned Sanford MMA will only assist him in reaching new heights.

Fighter Analysis

Following a drop-down from the current top 10 welterweight rankings, Texas’ own Geoff Neal hopes to resume his position inside the elite standings when faced with a No.7 ranked competitor in the “Silent Assassin.”.

Neal’s coming-out party began in 2017 when he first appeared inside a UFC cage. He went on to win his first five fights for the promotion, stopping four of those opponents inside the distance. Presenting a dangerous skillset both in his offensive striking and ground game, he boasts a notable highlight reel much like his Saturday evening opponent.

Looking to Bounce Back

The welterweight division is stacked with talent, and he was notably drip-fed a suitable level of competition to reach this stage. However, upon his meetings with Neil Magny and Stephen Thompson – two top-10 ranked fighters – he was notably outclassed at the higher level.

Luque will be another test for Neal’s competitiveness at this elite level but wins over Belal Muhammad, Niko Price, and Mike Perry once earnt Neal a ranked position which he now intends to reinstate with a statement victory this weekend.

UFC Vegas 59: Luque vs Neal Breakdown and Analysis

Luque Fight Style and How Can Luque Defeat Neal?

Luque is a highly skilled martial artist in all facets of the game, but his previous appearance and loss to Belal Muhammad laid out a blueprint for defeating the Brazilian. With that said, Neal could present Luque with a style of fight that will play right into his hands, literally.

Neal is a slugger and can sometimes present a flat-footed style; this will not only favor Luque's power hooks and counter two’s but will also allow him to tear away at the lead leg.

The negative of Luque’s striking is his reckless abandonment when throwing strikes, as he often leaves his head on the center line. This could be detrimental versus a power puncher like Neal.

Neal’s Fight Style and How Can Neal Defeat Luque?

Geoff Neal impressed against Santiago Ponzinibbio last time out, sailing through the skilled Argentinian to a split decision win behind a technical striking output.

Wrestling and lateral movement are how Belal overcame Luque. Can Neal emulate this approach? I’m not so sure.

Neal doesn’t own the same gas tank that allowed Belal to keep moving and grappling; he’ll also be under threat when shooting for takedowns as we know Luque boasts a dangerous BJJ offense.

It’ll be a war of footwork, and unless Neal can catch Luque with a knockout shot, I don’t envision a world where he can outpoint the “Silent Assassin.”.

UFC Vegas 59: Luque vs. Neal Betting Prediction

The available UFC odds favor Luque, and the current price of -175 is reasonable considering the Brazilian's experience advantage over his opponent.

I expect Luque to control the striking battle; three rounds of cutting the cage and landing his most favorable shot selection at will is how I envision the betting favorite winning this bout.
