Fighter Analysis

Neil Magny is unquestionably one of the most underrated welterweights of this decade. A 19-7 record obtained under the UFC banner ties him with George St-Pierre with the most wins in welterweight history.

Born in Brooklyn, New York but raised in Chicago, Magny excelled in education and became an Army veteran before competing in martial arts full-time. Stemming from a background in wrestling, Magny had always owned a competitive spirit in combat sports. Still, in 2010, he eventually focused on MMA full-time and secured a UFC contract with a mere two years of professional experience.

Aged 34, Magny is now competing in the prime of his career. A significant victory over the unbeaten prospect in Rakhmonov would break the No.11 ranked Magny back into the top-10 rankings and continue his path towards title contention.

Who is Shavkat Rakhmonov?

Fighter Profile

  • Pro MMA Record: (15-0-0) (8 KOs, 7 submissions)
  • Age: 27
  • Height: 6'1"
  • Reach: 77.0"
  • Trains With: Kazakhstan Top Team/ Sanford MMA
  • Origin Fighting Style: Combat Sambo

Fighter Analysis

Former M-1 Global welterweight champion Shavkat Rakhmonov has broken into the UFC top-15 rankings with three fights, whilst finishing all of his opponents inside the distance. Rakhmonov hails from Uzbekistan and has maintained an ultra-impressive professional MMA record comprising 15 consecutive wins – each of those won by knockout or submission.

Rakhmonov will face a well-versed fighter in Magny, who owns more decision wins in UFC history than any other fighter, and Rakhmonov has yet to allow a judge to interfere in his career. This contest is intriguing, and if Rakhmonov dominates another UFC veteran, he will solidify his position as a serious contender of the future.

With Khamzat Chimaev and Rakhmonov rising through the welterweight rankings, the future landscape of the 170lb division is heating up. Kamaru Usman will be presented with some serious contenders; that is, of course, if he sticks around.

Magny vs. Rakhmonov: Breakdown and Analysis

Magny Fight Style and How Magny Can Defeat Rakhmonov

Magny is a well-versed martial artist, a clear path to victory isn't viable for such a fighter, but avoiding the ground game of Rakhmonov would probably be advisable.

Magny could excel on the feet and utilize his long jab. Distance control and distance awareness are crucial, and if Magny is to have his hand raised, making this fight a technical striking game could give him success.

With that said, Magny also excels when he smothers the opposition, giving them no room or time to think about their offense.

Rakhmonov Fight Style and How Rakhmonov Can Defeat Magny

Unless you’re a specialist in one particular area, I struggle to see anybody defeating Rakhmonov.

Watching his career fights to date, he barely makes a mistake in any area of the game, and he possesses one of the most dangerous killer instinct mindsets in the promotion.

This could be Rakhmonov’s first fight of his MMA tenure that the judges decide the winner. Although we can never trust the horrific decision-making of the athletic commission, I expect the prospect will convincingly have his hand raised and continue his climb up the welterweight ladder.

Magny vs. Rakhmonov: Betting Odds and Pick

The available odds at the best sportsbooks and betting sites favor the unbeaten prospect. Still, the moneyline price of -365 isn’t viable, especially when we’re consistently panicking whenever a fight is to be decided by the incompetent judges working these UFC events.

As previously mentioned, I believe Magny can test Rakhmonov beyond his regular stoppage capabilities.

The Over 2 ½ rounds is priced in the plus money range, and I think this holds a significant amount of betting value.
