Ever just stare into the abyss and wonder… violence? That is me every time I set myself down at my laptop to write this weekly UFC column.
I am tasked by the lords and masters of BMR to write about the lock of the week on the UFC card every week that Dana White decides to put a cage up somewhere and have people pummel one another for less than 30% of their annual gross revenue.
Below, I’ll break down the UFC odds and give you a winning UFC pick! Let’s go.
Holly Holm vs. Ketlen Vieira
UFC Women’s Bantamweight Main Event Bout
Saturday, May 21, 2022 – 09:05 PM EDT at the UFC Apex
I then get to use this platform to make jokes like that because… I can? My editors are pretty cool with me leaning/rocking with whatever I feel as long as I give you, the people who read this on the toilet or bouncing between your browser and whatever service you use to wager, the lock of the week.
It’s a fun job that I get paid for amidst the 99 other things I do on a weekly basis, and this week we have a damn interesting main event on a card where some of the lines are too tight for my liking and others way too broad for me to even suggest you put a penny on the fight let alone some serious units.
But, we tend to circle back to the main event as it is the fight the SEO Gods want us most to focus on, especially when it features the woman who knocked out Ronda Rousey… the first time, Holly Holm.
Holly Holm (Record: 14-5-0)
Holm returns to the eight-sided cage after revitalizing herself with a two-fight winning streak over Irene Aldana and Rocky Pennington, both by unanimous decision.
It has been seven years since Holm landed the stoppage on the then unbeatable Ronda Rousey and five years since the “Preacher’s Daughter” stopped anyone before the scorecards (KO’ing Bethe Correia in 2017).
Since then four of Holm’s five fights have gone to the scorecards with three going her way, the other being a loss to Cris Cyborg. The one fight that reached a finish was when Amanda Nunes cooked and served Holm with a first-round TKO at UFC 239.
With a loss to common opponent Irene Aldana and a win over common opponent Miesha Tate, Ketlen Vieira has the opposite of Holm when it comes to those two fights, as Tate defeated Holm leading to a three-fight losing streak and Holm stifled Aldana in 2020.
Holm vs. Vieira Betting Odds and Pick
Walking into the main event on Saturday night at the UFC Apex, Holm is the -240 favorite, and Viera is a +205 underdog, which could be former champion bias or name bias, but it certainly is not recency bias, as Holm has not fought since late 2020 and Viera fought in late 2021.
The lock on this card is that we will see the fifth round, which is not a sext pick, we get that. But with the last five fights combined between both fighters going to the scorecard, it just makes sense (O 4 ½ set at -220).
