UFC London: Alexander Volkov vs. Tom Aspinall Lock on the Card (Archive)

The “large bois” are the headliners this week as the UFC returns with Tom Aspinall facing off against Alexander Volkov at UFC London.

Let’s break down the UFC odds for this battle!

Alexander Volkov vs. Tom Aspinall

UFC Heavyweight Main Event Bout

Saturday, March 19, 2022 – 11:05 PM EDT at 02 Arena

Top Three

One complaint of the UFC’s ESPN/Ruthless Aggression era is that the volume of cards cannot match up with the quality/depth of fights which, in most cases, is true. But this weekend the top three fights feel like they can be top three fights for a Fight Night or at the very least make a decent 3/5ths of a UFC PPV card.

Aspinall and Volkov don’t feel like a big-money main event, and that’s a fair statement, but it is a fun fight and something that, on a random Saturday night in March, could get the highs of humans who just like watching big humans pummel one another on national television.

Hot Balls

Volkov is known as the man who got walked off on by Derrick Lewis the night of the infamous “My balls was hot” speech in 2018 at UFC 229. Since that night, it has been a stop/start run for the man known as “Drago.”

Losing two of his last six, Volkov has not been able to get more than two wins in a row in the logjammed heavyweight division, losing to both Curtis Blaydes and Ciryl Gane by unanimous decision, the former bookending his win over Greg Hardy (UD) with his loss to Lewis.

Despite stopping Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris in back-to-back fights by TKO, four of his last six fights have gone to a decision inside the Octagon. In five-round fights, Volkov is 0-2 on the scorecards in the UFC, which is not a great stat for a fighter who is only 33.

Lock on the Card

For Aspinall, he’s yet to see a scorecard, ever. In his career, Aspinall has not only never seen a judge’s decision decide his fate, but the man also has never fought in the third round, let alone any “championship” rounds. Three of his four UFC victories have come by way of TKO (the other a submission), and he’s got two straight performance of the night bonuses.

This is a step-up fight for Aspinall, and I think he’s going to meet the moment. Your best UFC pick is to throw your money behind the British fighter on the moneyline while looking at the under 2 ½ rounds (+140) as a safety net.
