Editor’s Note: After a reshuffling of the main card due to a change in Chimaev’s weight class, Nate Diaz will fight against Tony Ferguson, and Khamzat Chimaev will fight against Kevin Holland.

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz

UFC 279 Welterweight Main Card Bout

Saturday, September 10, 2022 – 10:00 PM EDT at T-Mobile Arena

Fighter Analysis

Khamzat Chimaev

The return of Khamzat Chimaev (11-0-0) is now an exciting feeling that most UFC fans can get behind, particularly after his fight of the year candidate versus Gilbert Burns last time out.

The UFC’s fastest rising star may have to wait for the Usman/Edwards saga to play out before his title opportunity arrives.

Still, there’s no denying a significant victory this weekend will position him as the undeniable No.1 contender.

Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz (20-13-0) has been shouting for his release from the UFC for a long time; with just one fight remaining on his contract.

It could be the last time we witness the legendary ½ of the Diaz brothers compete in an octagon this weekend.

As a 20-plus-year fan of the sport, I’m slightly heartbroken; yes, my generation just lost Cowboy Cerrone, and now Diaz?

Personal feelings aside, they’re also giving Diaz a fight he doesn’t want, and it seems like he’s only accepting it to get out of his contract.

Chimaev vs. Diaz: Fight Breakdown

As a complete mixed martial artist, there’s no denying that Chimaev will own the advantage in almost every area of the game.

Youth, power, speed, and aggression are some highlight attributes of Chimaev, and he will take advantage of an aging Diaz.

Cardio and Jiu-Jitsu could be put in favor of Diaz, and we know his durability has rarely been tested.

However, Chimaev is a different beast, and we should expect an evolution every time he steps into the cage because of his willingness to learn and his hunger to achieve greatness.

Chimaev vs. Diaz: Odds and Prediction

The UFC odds with top-rated sportsbooks are supplying -1800 on Chimaev, a ridiculous price, I know.

However, I expect the brutal power shots of Chimaev to eventually cause the referee to step in and stop the contest.

Diaz is too tough for his own good, and we won’t see him quit, but the brutal forward aggression of Chimaev isn’t something Diaz will handle for 25 minutes.

Jailton Almeida vs. Anton Turkalj

UFC 279 Catchweight Preliminary Card Bout

Saturday, September 10, 2022 - 10:00 PM EDT at T-Mobile Arena

Fighter Analysis

Jailton Almeida

Following an extremely impressive arrival to the UFC roster, Jailton Almeida (16-2-0) returns to the octagon and hopes to extend his eleven-fight win streak of 11 stoppages via submission or TKO.

The Brazilian standout has wiped out the competition thus far, and he’ll undoubtedly be favoring his chances of another win inside the distance this weekend when facing a debuting and inexperienced newcomer.

Anton Turkalj

Anton Turkalj (8-0-0) is an undefeated prospect who’ll make his promotional debut this weekend; unfortunately for him, he’ll be faced with one of the best BJJ practitioners the UFC has to offer.

I’d also point towards Turkalj and his grappling being the better part of his game, but I can’t envision a world where he’ll find success in this area versus Almeida.

Almeida vs. Turkalj: Fight Breakdown

There’s a significant gap in Turkalj’s professional MMA record, and that’s the level of competition he’s fought.

In addition, his striking isn’t pretty, and he’ll be facing a monster in Almeida who owns boxing experience and an elite-level BJJ offense.

Almeida vs. Turkalj: Odds and Prediction

The UFC odds with Bookmaker Review position Almeida as the second most likely fighter to win at UFC 279, with only Chimaev odds exceeding the Brazilian’s price tag.

However, to find some actual betting value, the under 1 ½ rounds isn’t a bad proposition for a fighter renowned for getting the job done inside the first round.
