Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway

UFC Featherweight Co-Main Event Championship Bout

Saturday, July 02, 2022 – 08:00 PM EDT at T-Mobile Arena

Alexander Volkanovski

  • Pro MMA Record: (24-1-0) (12 KOs, 9 submissions)
  • Age: 33
  • Height: 5'6"
  • Reach: 65.5"
  • Trains With: City Kickboxing & Tiger Muay Thai
  • Origin Fighting Style: Wrestling

Ten fights into his UFC career, Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski has maintained an unbeaten record alongside three title defenses.

I could spend countless hours writing about the achievements of Australia’s most dominant mixed martial artist in their country’s history, but I think his No.2 ranking on the pound-for-pound list speaks for itself.

Volkanovski hasn’t tasted defeat since 2013, and he refused to digest another losing night that’s accumulated to a 21-fight consecutive win streak dating back before his UFC debut.

Whilst assisting Israel Adesanya, Dan Hooker, and Kai-Kara France in putting New Zealand’s City Kickboxing gym on the map, Volk has generated one of the most notable legacies in UFC history at 145lbs.

Max Holloway

  • Pro MMA Record: (19-1-0) (3 KOs, 6 submissions)
  • Age: 30
  • Height: 5'11"
  • Reach: 69.0"
  • Trains With: Gracie Technics
  • Origin Fighting Style: Kickboxing

Suppose Alexander Volkanovski didn’t turn up to ruin Max Holloway’s party. In that case, there’s no denying that “Blessed” would be the king of the featherweight division as nobody has close to compromising his skillset outside of the current champion.

Following his fourth professional MMA bout in 2012, Holloway has been competing amongst the elite of the UFC and is now a qualified veteran of the company.

Surprisingly, there’s a chance we’ve yet to witness him reach his prime fighting years. As crazy as that sounds, Holloway is just 30 years old with a timeline that could still provide an even greater version of himself.

Two-Fight Win Streak

With a two-fight win streak over Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez, some say that Holloway is receiving his third and final opportunity to avenge his 0-2 record versus Volkanovski.

The second meeting between the two stirred up controversy in the decision-making as Holloway proved he could hang with the current champ, and success this weekend would solidify him as one of the best ever to do it.

Volkanovski vs. Holloway Breakdown and Analysis

Volkanovski Fight Style

Why does Volkanovski continue to solve the puzzle that is Max Holloway? From watching their previous two meetings, I believe the removal of Holloway’s lengthy combinations has given the champ a slight edge in taking those victories.

He doesn’t allow Max to unleash those ridiculously high-numbered combos that have allotted so much success to the former champ in the past.

Returning fire with heavy counterstrikes has stopped Max in his tracks; alongside the faints and baiting tactics, Holloway’s usual comfortable in-octagon approach is removed when he’s stood in front of Volkanovski.

How Can Volkanovski Defeat Holloway?

The approach in which Volkanovski mixes his low and inside leg kicks into his striking combinations is effortless. Still, his key to defeating Max for a third and final time would undoubtedly be his counter-attacking ability.

Holloway’s Fight Style

Holloway is most known for his high output and insane level of cardio, but he’s already met his match with this approach on two occasions, and he’ll need to alter the game plan to avoid a triple threat of losses to the CKB standout.

As one of the most brutal fights to predict, anticipating how Max will approach this bout is challenging, but there’s a likelihood that he’ll level up his aggression from the opening bell.

How Can Holloway Defeat Volkanovski?

As he’s known as a slow starter, should Max come out guns blazing and maintain an aggressive approach through all five rounds, it could be enough to steer the judges’ in his favor.

Volkanovski vs. Holloway Betting Prediction

The available odds at Bookmakers Review favor Volkanovski with a -195 price tag, but when it comes to high-level matchups such as this, it should automatically be -110 on either side. This fight will repeat the previous two and reach a judge’s decision.

The Nevada Athletic State Commission has been a thorn in the side of UFC bettors and professional fighters with their continuous incompetency. Still, this weekend’s co-main event will be razor-thin in terms of striking numbers.

Who to Bet On?

With that said, I believe Volkanovski can land a takedown or two, and he does possess the more damaging strikes; for this reason, wagering on the Volkanovski decision prop seems like a viable approach to avoid laying juice on the over or moneyline.
